Do other SEC teams schedule tougher OOC?

Usually hitting is ahead of pitching early in the year as pitchers are working on timing, pitch counts, and velocity.... So it is worth figuring out your starters/pen and stretching them out in the long run vs playing some tougher competition early.

Why isn't ell our coach? He knows exactly when pitchers need to be pulled, how they're going to perform before they get in a game and who we should play. I'd say it's a no-brainer.

(note to sarcasm-impaired: this is sarcasm)

You can do the same no matter who you play. And it could be said that you could stretch them out more due to playing tougher teams who will likely get on base more. That being said, we didn't need 4 weeks of easy teams to figure out our 3 starters.

I forgot to mention: ell has the added benefit of being a coach who only promotes one player, overlooking every error.

Can I say underachieve instead?

Sure

I feel like we achieved about where expected. We lost to a better team there last year IMO

If they do, it puts us at a disadvantage.

There are obvious moves rabbit. Go in Josh's thread. The logic of using Gilbert in the 7th, using PM's decision not mine, does not make sense. Why not a quick hook on Newman?

PM had a quote this weekend... "We knew how he would perform because he's been doing it for four weeks." Was he talking about Bugg or Valek? If it applies to one, why not both? Go to Broski's thread 2 weeks ago to view my opinion of Bugg this year. He's not pitching well; he's not throwing strikes and he's getting hit. Why throw him down 2 in the 8th?

I can also link my preseason thoughts on the easy schedule and my feelings then on how it would be helpful for a young team and for the coaches to see who can do what.

I'm not using hindsight. And I'm not making up criticisms without explaining or backing them up. I talk to other coaches and players and we are often of the same mind in the criticisms. I'm more vocal about it here. I get that I'm polarizing and hyperbolic. No matter what I post or say, people dislike. Hell, I bet I could get this place to hate sunshine and ice cream at this point.

If you want to debate and disagree with me, let's go for it. I'm game. I've been wrong plenty. I always own up to it (Chinea). If you're just going to use personal attacks combined with sarcasm because you can't make actual points, then

We were the #1 team for the most of the year and never developed a 3rd starter. We were a throw to first and one pitcher away from having a real shot at at least getting to the final.

In the preseason thread where we discussed the easy OOC, I want to say I mentioned Vandy going to the West Coast to play Stanford and one other team. I can't remember. And Florida playing Miami and Florida State. Although I conceded that they are fortunate to be so close to so many schools.

LSU will play ULLLLLL, pre season ranked in the upper top 10; Tulane, who was ranked this yr; Lamar had 12 seniors & is a favorite to win its conference. We play N.Dame later in the season & they usually make the playoffs. Add to that the #1,2,3, 7, 12 ranked SEC teams. "Underachieving"? LSU won the SEC regular season championship. LAST YEAR. In the past decade, the most NC's that any team has won is 2. CPM is next with 1.

You started your post with talking about ULL being ranked. They just lost a series to Little Rock and are worse than UNO at this point.

Last year, we couldn't find a 3rd starter, but had great hitting to back up the lack of one. Killed us in Omaha. We also avoided Florida and Vandy, got Arky early when they sucked and A&M when they started to suck. We started the on their spiral actually. That's why we won the SEC regular season.

I just wonder about playing a hard schedule with such a green team. Is that the best option? Would it discourage youngsters to get blown out in the early season when they're trying to work out the kinks?

I rag you because you knight for one player over all the others. Why not promote the freshman who has been consistently hitting all year?

It's easy to sit back in your computer easy chair and criticize every mistake the Tigers make (and by extension the coach). But he's won a CWS championship so I cut him a little more slack than your armchair coaches.

Yep, and that last part is why they were better than us.

And that's a fair argument. It's a real one. Plenty of people think it's best for a young team. I just disagree. I don't think we would get "blown out" and I don't think it would be so harmful to the psyche of a player if we did. What about a player's psyche when they can't do well vs the worst teams we play? Which has happened.

About KRob, it really is me just being an extension of hcb since he's banned. My favorite player is Pap. Has been. I predicted he would beat out Sciv last year by SEC. So damn wrong there.

And this is what I do. Not arm chair coach, but think through every aspect of the game as it happens. Not just watching to enjoy (I promise I do actually enjoy watching. Brought my 2-year old to his first game Saturday and had the time of my life). I'm just not that far removed from playing and I can't help myself. I wasn't a talented player. But I could play smart. It's the only way I could find success because I only had 1 of the 5 tools.

I'm too hard on PM here, I know. Sometimes it's just to fire people up for no reason other than to watch the world burn. But when he's right, I say it. He was right to start Poche game 1 in Omaha last year. People thought it was dumb but it was the right call if you're playing to win the whole thing and not just game 1.

I'd love to go play teams like Long Beach for a 3 game set over there early in the year again.

Even if we only took 1 of 3.
