Just out of curiousity does Austin dress out as #99 and if someone gets hurt and he has to go in on the OL he's supposed to switch his jersey to #71?

Or does he dress out as #71 and change his jersey everytime LSU enters the redzone?

I think the numbering system is only applicable to the NFL but I'm a tad ignorant on this subject

in college you can wear whatever number you want

example:

Ego is 9

Reggie Bush was 5 at USC but he couldnt wear that in NFL so he went to 25

I think OL do have a # restriction. I believe they need to be between 50 and 79 bc of the defense needs to know that they cant be downfield receivers. Also, offensive skill guys cant use 50-79.

This. He lined up at TE, so he needed to change his number. I wouldn't be surprised if they threw to him to switch it up

Why can't he just wear 71 and declare himself eligible on certain plays? i.e Zach Strief a few years ago with the Saints??

Not trying to be a jerk but isn't Austin the one that was born w/o some fingers on one of his hands?? Prob won't be throwing to him if thats the case.

ETA: Yeah he is missing fingers on his right hand.

Maybe CFB doesn't give you the option?? I remember Barksdale used to have to switch #s too when he came in his freshman yr as jumbo TE. Also T-Bob wore a different # when he used to line up at FB.

Never knew that. I bet he's adjusted to it. I know a guy with only a thumb on one hand and he can catch fairly well. They might not actually throw to him, but they can use him as a decoy. For him to be allowed to move downfield he has to have an eligible number. Or else we would get flagged for ineligible receiver downfield

My curiosity was more out of the logistics of the situation and wondering what he did Saturday night?

Does anyone know if he came out of the tunnel wearing 71 or 99?

Anyone in the stands notice if he was swapping jerseys or wore 99 the entire night?

I would assume that he's going to come out wearing 99 every game, and would switch to 71 if and only if an injury occurs, but just curious if that assumption is correct.
