LSU responded by creating all kinds of havoc in the full court press package.

Given the depth of this team, is this something we can expect to see more regularly (think like Louisville) or is this something he will only really use against the bottom-feeders to get out ahead?

You'll see it on the reg. CJJ loves to press, just hasn't had depth. We didn't do it against Mcneese as much because we only had 4 guards.

Add in that the shot clock is now 30 seconds

By the time the opponent gets into their half court set, there's less than 20 seconds on the shot clock. It's nice. They will do it pretty often.

right, in fact, he's reverted to the full court press many times in close games against better competition in the past...just to get some momentum.

I really like CJJ, his teams have been consistently fun to watch win or lose.

It can be an entertaining brand of ball, no doubt. The 30 second shot clock really helps his style of play.

LSU struggled for a while with the full court press against KSU. They didn't really "attack" the player who received the entry pass with as much pressure as Coleman did in the '12-'13. He and Hickey made that press very effective. LSU eventually forced a few TOs, but also gave up some easy baskets that allowed KSU to hang around early. The "token" pressure that they switched to later seemed to be more effective. Moving forward I think you'll see LSU play a defensive style somewhere between the all out press (ala Ark or WVU) and the extended pressure defense played by Louisville and Florida (when Donovan was there)

With the 30 second shot clock LSU could be able to cause havoc for the slow-paced half court teams by forcing them to get into their sets much later in the shot clock than they would like to.

Except when we got slowed down into half court last year, then it was miserable to watch. Some of you have short memories.

So far this year it's light years ahead of what last year looked like though.

Originally they were running more of a three quarter court zone and weren't getting back quick enough when they broke through the first line. I hope they have the horses to run a true full court man to man for a lot of the game. That can be fun to watch and with TQ and sampson's length could be lethal.

I don't think the purpose of that particular press last night was to get a very aggressive trap on the person with the ball. Not the one taking it up court anyway. It was more of a 3/4 court press.

The downfall of a press is if you are able to break it easily with the pass you will have a 2 on 1/3 on 2 opportunity at the rim. It happened a few times, but it also forced multiple rushed shots. They weren't really close because of the press, they were close because they were in set offenses and drained a few 3's. I think the press took away most of those 3 point looks and is the reason we went on that huge run to end the half.

My only real issue I saw with the press last night was that the few times they did break it and managed to slow it down to get set we seemed a bit lost transitioning back into our man-to-man defense. Would almost rather see us go from a press to zone D when this happens, so we don't have guys running all over the court trying to find their man. It is a huge advantage though that we can pretty much guard anybody with our 1-4 interchangeably. That's a huge plus for our defense.
