I see your point. Clemente was the best baseball player period.

Ferguson was fun to listen to, but I swear, if you were watching the game, and listening to him call it on the radio, you would think you and he were watching different games sometimes.

My daddy would mix a whiskey and water and we'd sit at the kitchen table listening to John on a cheap tranistor radio. What great memories.
"and the Tgers are wearing white jerseys with purple numbers, gold pants and gold headgear". I miss John.

Why don't you link or mention Dandy Don? This is where you heard it from. Everyday someone starts a thread after reading his report. And I know that the Dandy one is gone but his son is carrying the torch.

Although grew up listening and loved his broadcasts we made fun of JF just as much as JH for his "spilled" calls but still like JH calls maybe not quite as much since JF was the original broadcaster to me anyway!

jim hawthorne is ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE!! i thank the lord i don't have to listen to him on fb anymore because all our games are on tv. i have always liked doug mareau a lot for some reason.
i am still subjected to jim's disgraceful calls on my xm radio for several hoops games, though. whenever i hear him describe something positive happening for LSU, i start to do the referee 10 second count, and i know that if i can get to 10, jimmy PROBABLY didn't get the call wrong and the positive LSU play stands. of course kevin ford corrects his dumb arse all night, and ford is usually spot on( as is blanton).

John Ferguson was pretty good, better than Hawthorne. One thing about his calls was revealed when TV became more common - his call was sometimes several seconds behind live action. I think he did this as a way to be more accurate. Of course, all play-by-play guys will make mistakes. I wish Hawthorne would adopt this method.
BTW, I'm not talking about the broadcast delay here. In the early days, the TV and radio broadcasts were both real-time and therefor in synch with each other.
Here's a classic example of Ferguson:
Jones to Davis

I've heard it said that Milo locked the booth on his partner so that he could have Hank's home run call to break Ruth's record all to himself.
Is this true?

How much better was he than Harthorne!
BTW, if you're gonna dis the man at least get his name right.
He's a big part of LSU, and maybe you're too young to relate to the days when Fergy and Walt, or Jim and crew, were all we had.
There was a time when LSU was rarely ever on TV, but we had Notre Dame every week. I still dance a jig every time they lose.
I often turn down TV broadcast listen to Jim since it's like I'm listening with family and friends, not some boring monotone drone.

I wasn't going to comment until I saw this......yes, Ferguson's call was as good as most calling college football back in the day. BUT, he did tend to delay his calls by up to 8 seconds and when LSU was on television, it caught up to him. He made mistakes as do ALL announcers, but the 'color' and the excitement in his voice made up for a lot.
Hawthorne is not as bad as some say and not as good as others say. He's at the point where he needs to let go of some sports and concentrate on football, if that's his preference. The power of being 'the voice of the Tigers' is hard to relinquish but it is inevitable.
Now, if you want to talk about MY personal favorite 'voice of the Tigers'....let's talk about the guy who was on a par with anyone in the country in his day. J. C. Politz....that cat had it all together.
(I've called HS and Small College football in my past and have a unique appreciation for the job.)

I am older than most of you on this board. I first watched LSU football by ushering fans to their seats beginning in 1954-55 when I was a Cub Scout. The next year I sold Cokes to get in free.
Unfortunately for most of you, you are too young to have heard J C Politz who was THE best football play by play guy on the radio ever! He was exciting to hear, accurate and LSU to the core. I was out of state on Halloween nite, 1959, but I heard Politz cracking thru the radio on WWL saying "listen to the cheer for Billy Cannon as he runs off the field, great All American!". JF could be fun and interesting but he blew it more times than I can count. I refuse to listen to Hawthorne!
I'm looking forward to another LSU National Championship this year. Go Tigers!!!!!

John was famous for using a brown magic marker..this was before hair dyes for men were available...to make his sideburns darker. And when he would start sweating, his burns would run.Yet, he did it for yrs & yrs. He's one of the guys who I have loved to sat down & had a few beers with to hear the inside stories he had. He always promised to write a book on his yrs behind the mike but never did. And, yes, J.C.Politz was a character. He's the one who made the radio call on Cannon's run.

Hi Tiger Ice. I was posting when your post came in and I saw yours when I finished.
I am also from DS and graduated DSHS in 59. Sounds like we might know one another.
Send me an email at curtlsu@cox.net.

Done.....
Anyone have any good stories about JF or JCP they'd like to share.
Listening to both of them on WLCS back in the day with the high pitched squeel made for an atmosphere that really can't be described. You had to really WANT to listen to the game, not just passively have it on ....LOL.

Loved John Ferguson. Cannot tell you how many wonderful Saturday nights my dad and I sat by an AM radio (having to orient it this way and that to get the signal) listening to the voice of the Tigers (along with Walter Hill and Doug Moreau). One of my favorite "Fergusonisms" was how he described a role in a tackle as having a "heavy shoulder."
Also, love Jim Hawthorne. For my part, they're both part of Tiger lore and any criticism over mannerisms/accuracy is completely overshadowed by how much they've meant to Tiger fans over the years.
I would take either in a heratbeat over Cristil, Munson, or anybody else.

Feguson would always say the QB 'Shoots a pass' to whoever.....
Posted on 7/15/12 at 5:25 pm to JTA1985
My only problem with Ferguson was every pass thrown by an LSU QB was "Just off the fingertips" of the receiver and every pass thrown by an opponent was "Almost intercepted."
Other than that he and Walter Hill were a great team.
You always knew where the ball was, what the situation was and who had made the play, something that is sometimes lacking with Hawthorne and crew.
