Had the pleasure of hearing Jim speak as the keynote address at an American Red Cross fundraiser last night in the Stadium Club. What an amazing man. That voice is forever in my head when I think of the best moments in tiger sports.
He said his favorite LSU moment (undoubtedly) had to have been Ben McDonalds homer to win the championship in 96. He said he had no clue what he said when he called that home run, and waited to listen to the recording. He talked about how he was a basket case of emotions following that game, but was able to hold back the tears. When he was stepping into the elevator at the hotel after the dust settled that night, he said his emotions had finally caught up to him and he could no longer fight the tears, but there was a problem, somebody else got on the elevator behind him -- it was Ben McDonald (The bus had left him at the field while he was doing post-game). It was amazing hearing him tell that story and talk about that exchange of words in the elevator.
Hawthorne is a true LSU legend, and his passion for the tigers is undeniable-- he was getting choked up just talking about how blessed he was to be a part of this "fine university".
Favorite Hawthorne calls of all time?

Figured Jack Hunt's catch would have been his favorite.

This could have been such a great story. I would love to hear what was said between Hawthorne and Warren Morris on the elevator if Ben McDonald hadn't gotten in the way.

And to be serious, my favorite JH call(funniest) was driving to BR listening to the LSU/MSU game in the early 2000's. I heard a RB break off a run by the name of Ali Landry
If I am not mistaken, She had just won the Ms. USA pageant and I guess JH was having fantasies of her while watching Alley Broussard run

quote:maybe he was at a Denham Springs game back when Ben was pitching, dunking and punting - I believe he did all three as a student - could be wrong. Shirley he hit a tater doing all three, at least one time.
Someone will soon point out to you who hit that home run.
