I like the fact that JJ is very careful with his passes and doesn't throw into coverage often. I think he has played fairly well so far. However, he has thrown several "ground balls" so far to his receivers. (The first pass of the Vandy game comes to mind. Any higher and Lafell has a 30 yard catch.) He did it once or twice vs. Washington.
Is there any reason he does this other than his throwing motion, or is it one bad throw out of many good ones.

nerves.

dude was nervous against vandy, it was his first start in tiger stadium. also, he came up in a time when another young QB got booed just for stepping on the field.

yeah, dude was way nervous.

probably the product of over-thinking the throw. His head is probably swimming right now with the pace of a regular season...

I would like to see him get the nose of the football up a little (nose-down footballs are hard to catch). He'll get it together

In the Vandy game, his arm was hit by a defender during the throwing motion.

I think his throwing motion is gorgeous - it might not be good, but I think it looks smooth.

First, JJ is an exceptional talent physically and mentally. However, he’s a very young starting QB. In fact, he’s the youngest starting QB in the SEC and he’s far from being a polished starting SEC QB. But, he’ll get there. Jordan has great pocket presence, feels the pressure, sees the field well and most importantly takes care of the ball. However, JJ at this point, isn’t a very accurate passer and it’s his feet that are the problem. He didn’t step into the throw to LaFell -- He doesn’t always step into his throws or set his feet and that’s most of the problem. His arm slot has gotten better since last year and that helps too but it may take more time/reps before it’s where it should be. Many of his completion against Vandy weren’t too accurate. I’m not bashing JJ – he’s going to be great. Accuracy is a function of several aspects of the game and is developed/improved later in a QB’s progression. As he becomes more familiar w/ the playbook, reading defenses, foot work, etc. the accuracy will come and WR won’t be reaching back for balls or practically scooping it off the turf, ala. LaFell on a bubble screen to the right during the game.
That said, the kid is awesome and you could tell he had “IT” last year against GT when he looked off the safety and came back to Dickson for the TD. The guy has a very high football IQ.

This. Thanks for putting it in soo many words. His "arm slot" was built to throw, but you're right, what inaccuracy he has is his footwork so far..

Everybody think back to Matt Mauck's first few games before he got hurt in 2002. How accurate was he early that season? Then think about how much better he was by the start of the next season. One of the main reasons that he said his accuracy improved was that, because of the injury, he had to learn to set his feet more and become a pocket passer. Just look at the results in one year with the right instruction. If JJ puts in the work and is trained properly by the staff, then his mechanics should get a lot better.

Thanks LittleJerry. I'll be sure to look for some of those things during the upcoming games.

I call BS on this "very young" crap. That little skinny QB at Miami is the same age as JJ and can flat out sling the ball on a rope and hit a dime at 50 yards. ESPN is talking him up for the Heisman. Same class and star rating as JJ. Youth is no longer an excuse in college football.

I watched JJ throw them in the ground all through high school. Every game he would one and two hop his throws to receivers. I think thats why your seeing limited throws from him. I was never impressed with is arm/accuracy in HS.

Not only do I not think he will win the Heisman, but I think Shepard takes over at QB after about the fourth game. Shepard is better than most of you think.

he needs to work on his footwork a little more...He is shaky on the 6-back and plant. He'll get better though.

I still believe Shepard is more talented that JJ and will eventually take over the starting QB spot. I haven't seen anything on the field to change my mind.

are you talking about??? If the nose stays up on the football, it is floating in the air, and not thrown with velocity...not exactly what you want. And, a nose down football is NOT hard to catch, IF you use your hands and not your chest...ask Henderson
