He would've beaten him out anyway.

Tennessee Titans quarterback Jake Locker announced his retirement today according to a report from NFL.com. Locker was the eighth overall pick in 2011.

"I am retiring from football after much reflection and discussion with my family," Locker said in a statement NFL.com's Ian Rapoport published. "I will always be grateful for having had the opportunity to realize my childhood dream of playing in the NFL and for the lifelong relationships I developed because of that experience.

"Football has always played a pivotal role in my life and I love the game, but I no longer have the burning desire necessary to play the game for a living; to continue to do so would be unfair to the next organization with whom I would eventually sign. I realize this decision is surprising to many, but I know in my heart that it is the right decision and I look forward to spending more time with my family and pursuing other interests."

With Locker's retirement, former LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger is now the top quarterback on Titans roster ahead of Charlie Whitehurst and Jordan Palmer.

Mettenberger started six games last season and threw for 1,412 yards with eight touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Bet by October we hear some NFL team with a quarterback need is working out Jake Locker. He will suddenly realize how much he misses the game and be ready to return with a renewed passion for the game after much soul searching.

Yeah I didn't know he was a free agent. It's not really news in that case. No way the Titans would've resigned him. He probably doesn't want to play the backup QB role. He's just taking his money and running.

Why the hell not. Being a backup qb sounds pretty awesome. Make a few mil, hold a clip board. Practice alot, and occasionally play in games where no one expects much from you

Titans will probably draft mariotta if a trade isn't worked out.

False. They don't want mariota or Winston. They want to give Mett a shot. They've said this countless times

I live in TN right now and all the word on sports radio is that Mett is the guy. They will be taking Leonord Williams at the 2 or trading the pick.

They may take a guy like Hundley or Petty in the later rounds to create a "competition" but as of right now it's Mett's job to lose.

I can't see why he wouldn't be. He did better as a rookie than any other qb they had.
