CLM talks really high on him and I agree he could be great but I just dont feel like if it came down to it he could win games for us at the moment.

1. LSU is in a wonderful position in that they don't have to rely on a QB being Peyton Manning to win games - an adequate passer is enough. The worst situation was 1/9 and Mett would have probably been enough of a difference maker with his skill set then not to mention with the progress he is showing in each game.

2. LSU is 97 in passing with 203 yards per game
Bama is 83 with 213 yards per game (30 yards difference in total) - almost same M.O. except LSU has a far superior run average of 269 to balance it out as opposed to bama at 186.

I do realize different opponents,apples/oranges but then if Bama with the All-NFL OL + experienced QB + RB stable can do only that - I don't see the harm in a bit of comparison.

Mett has had to play within the confines of the system that the coaches plan out for him. He doesn't call his own plays. He is making his fourth start this upcoming Saturday.

He throws accurate enough and has room to improve with experience. You must understand that his receivers are very young and inexperienced. They too must improve in order for his talents to be show cased properly. Give him time. Next year he may be the heisman qb you are looking for. This year he is still learning what he can do and how to play qb in the sec. Give him a break.

You must be an anlysts and coach to make such "concerning" observations...

Yep. Phantom ineligible lineman downfield call on Williford. The fact that the Tiger receivers have been good enough to hall in several deep throws in spite of the passes not being perfect is what we should be talking about. Beckham, Landry and even Shep have displayed pretty good hands other than the Washington game. The timing will get better as the year goes along IMO.

He ranks somewhere in the 30's as far as QB prospects go, in my professional opinion. He is good, not great. We are just use to seeing a miserable product put out on the field.

Just a thought but maybe Mett is throwing where the reciever should be and instead the reciever is a yard closer / further / behind / or ahead of where they should be and it causes them to have to adjust. Maybe the throws are on the money and its just unpolished receivers running bad routs. Mayb be why CLM still sings Mett's praises.

you should probably stop looking at the stat rankings and look at the efficiency of the offense.

Against Washington, LSU's offense was very balanced... maybe not in terms of yards, but from the standpoint that both our running plays and our passing plays were successful, and the Huskies a) didn't know what was coming next: run or pass, and b) couldn't stop anything we did.

A balanced offense isn't limited to an offense that has 50% run / 50% pass in terms of plays and/or yards. A balanced offense has the ability to produce a successful play either by runing or passing. In this way, LSU has been very balanced this year. It's been a joy to watch.

How many times in the past few years have you seen us do a straight 3-, 5-step drop from the I-formation? very, very few. We're doing it all the time now.

Keep watching how our tendencies are changing. We're a completely different offense this year, even if we're still getting most of our yards on the ground.

Im not saying he cant make completions. Even with the drops, a lot of credit needs to go to the receivers that make adjustments to be able to make the catch

Check out the pass to OBJ late in the Idaho game. He stops and tries to jump for the ball, and it goes just over his head. If he keeps running, that's a 40-50 yard pass right in the bread basket. That trust will develop as the season progresses. Mett is doing well and exactly what we need him to do.

The OP was worried that Mett might not come through in a bad situation. The point is that even being just a 30 something rated QB is enough (given the other parts of the LSU machine) to get to and win the BCSNCG and the chances of those worrisome hypothetical situation are very low.

The worst was 1/9 when Bama dared LSU throw and there was no one to do so with reliability. Even if Mett does have a lower percentage of just 40-50 % completion against similar Defenses, it would still be better than what it was before and what was there before was 13-0 and an SEC title.

For comparisons sake:
Lee's first 3 games against much, much tougher competition last year
40/59, 68% completion percentage, ~150 YPG
3 TD / 1 INT

Mett is doing just fine for his limited experience and he is unquestionably better than any LSU QB in the last few years. He is not perfect and does have a few weaknesses that he can improve on:
1) On some occasions he does the classic JJ stare down of his primary receiver
2) He has too much confidence in his ability to throw into every window even when one isn't there. examples: he forced a throw on a quick out near opponent's goal that should have been picked and then on the next play threw an int. Then last week same thing ; near idaho's goal threw into quadruple coverage and on the next play threw the int. when receiver was not open.

But,that being said, he can and will improve. And his ability will prevent teams from stacking the box or at least he'll make teams that do pay the price, imo.

if there is any place for concern in our passing game its not Mett, its our line failing to protect adequately. Josh looked pitiful at left tackle against weak competition. I'm afraid most SEC ends are gonna kick his arse.

Since we cant do anything about the competition being tougher just like we don't have RR this year to compare.

Mett has 48/68, more throws, higher completion, ypg, ypt, 4tds but 1 more int.

I think we can wait and see for 2 more games at least before even beginning to nit pick or worry.

Also, the coaches are just starting to get some real game film on mett to evaluate exactly what he does well and what they need to work on. They can better formulate what plays work well for him and which situations and plays both he and his receivers excell in. This is a work in progress. Mett is at least as good as our senior was last year and he's only three games into his career as lsu's starter.

Two questions:

1) What profession would that be?

2) Who are the 30+ QB's ahead of him?

Ummm... wake up and read all the stats! Did you notice passing efficiency? We stop throwing to keep from running up the score. WAKE UP!
