Blitz on 3rd and long, hurry the throw or get the sack.

blitz. Bringing pressure makes the QB decide quicker. No pressure allows the QB to take his sweet time, and no DB can cover a receiver for more than a few seconds.

Bring pressure and make the QB make a quick throw. Our odds are much better.

How many first downs did we give up on 3rd and long last weekend by rushing 3 and dropping 8?

We gave up 2 out of 9 3rd downs. One of which was on 3rd and long, the other 3rd and goal.

so I don't really see the premise of your thread as a problem from last week

What we shouldn't do is have the outside CB bite on the 8 yard route allowing the slot receiver to be open on a 15 yard out pattern.

I don't get why you don't blitz on 3rd and long. Force a bad throw, or force a quick throw.

The obvious answer is that if they pick up the blitz and one WR beats your CB, it's an easy conversion.

There is no single right answer.

well if you are playing against LSU, then you don't have to cover for a pass, so it really doesn't matter what defense you are in, same goes for 2nd and 14

Depends on QB in my opinion. Talking last week with a redshirt freshman qb I’m coming with some sort of exotic blitz. He gets confused and a turnover is bound to happen. If you have a veteran qb it depends on the line. Good line that is good at picking up blitzes you may hang back a little. Weak o line you send the House. I’m also a firm beleiver in you never sending less than 4 rushers on any play.

Depends on who the QB is, and the tendencies you've shown up to that point.

What happened to Key and Chassion on the field at the same time?

Key is out of shape and Thompson has been balling out this year. Currently, I'd rather see Corey and Chaisson out there on 3rd down until Key looks better.

Honestly, I think that 3rd and 15 we gave up against Florida was a really big deal. They drove the field, established a run game, and gained momentum by scorin a touchdown on that drive. If we stop them there, the game likely doesn’t end up as close.

I will be the first person to tell you that 3rd downs are the most critical stat in a football game behind turnovers. TOP next, but usually dependent on the other 2.

It was certainly a big deal, but it's not practical to stop them all. One play could and often does come back to winning (or losing) and individual matchup.

I just don't think the OPs premise that it was a widespread problem is accurate because it wasn't. We did great on 3rd down. To your point, if we did much worse we could have easily lost. So doing so well likely won us the game, therefore I wouldn't be looking to change much this week.

Hard to say without seeing the formation.
You're asking for disaster "bringing the house" every 3rd/long. No cover for hot route, etc?
Show all out blitz and drop some into zone just prior to snap often gives high percentage to screw up most plays.

Rush 3 and delayed rush with the 4th.

Back 7 need to keep their men in front of the first down marker and TACKLE.
