Yeah, that's what I'm saying.

I think 5 forced fumbles and 3 recoveries makes up for 20 tackles throughout the season.

Just my opinion.

Sometimes his aggressiveness got him out of position...cost us the Ark. game???

I would say the turnovers are almost always bigger than tackles.

Unless Marshawn Lynch is running the ball obviously...

No, please see Karnell Hatcher's play for that game.

And Tryann still had 8 tackles, two tackles for a loss and one sack in the Arkansas game.

Maybe you give the nod to Landry bc he did it on a national championship defense

Tyrann did it on a national championship defense too, just that his offense wasn't up to par.

I'm guessing you are new to LSU op. Laron Landry led the team in tackles as a freshman. Mathieu didn't even start till he was forced to.

Yeah, like Mathieu wasn't good enough to start. Dude had 9 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, 1 sack and 1 forced fumble in his first game against North Carolina. I think he was 3rd in the SEC in forced fumbles and 6th in fumble recoveries. And that's not counting the two forced fumbles he had against A&M where he won the Cotton Bowl Defensive MVP Award. You could also look at it like this - just think of the numbers he might have put up if he would have been the starter.

He was a nickel back all year long. I think most people consider him a starter.

14 had 3.5 sacks,7.5 tfl, 1 pick, 3 ff, 2 fumble rec,
30 had 3 sacks,3.5 tfl, 2 picks

Landry had 80 tackles to Mathieu's 50. Given the fact that landry started 10 games and Tyrann only started 1, if 14 was on the field for as many plays as 30 the difference in tackles would not be nearly as much. When 14 was on the field he found a way to make an impact in limited time. The fact that he is even compared to Landry is amazing. But it is not accurate to say the two have no comparison to be made. This thread does not have to get nasty, it is a tribute to a kid who looks to have a bright future as a tiger. I love Dirty Thirty, he might be my favorite tiger of all time.

Since we're talking strictly LSU, Kevin Faulk was the best Freshman, post-1987. Defensively, I say best Freshman goes to Anthony "Booger" McFarland, who was also a Freshman in 1995.

Mattheiu is a beast, though. He had a great game against Tennessee, and he got even better as the season went on. Give him the 18.
