So, any of you turf guys, will they be able to find a shade-tolerant natural turf that works in our climate?
I already answered that previously. There already IS a shade tolerant turf in Tiger Stadium. Celebration Bermuda. The problem is they can't keep tearing it up for the redneck fest and re-sodding every year. It will never mature and develop a good strong root system. That's why you see the turf coming up and uprooting during pre-game warmups. Weak root system. I don't know if they are re-sodding the entire field or just the northern end where the bands are set up.

They can still do this but Fasbender apparently isn't into that look. (Even if LSU fans like the way it looks) You get that effect two ways: with paint or with a lawnmover opposite directional mowing, which is more subtle than paint. It should be done for at least one of the big nationally televised games. The Bama game would have been perfect but nobody stepped up to the plate at LSU and saw to it that it was done. Not as much pride in the AD as there used to be.

People always say how great the field looks during the season then switch and say it sucks during the offseason. It's a never ending cycle.

Actually, yes. Since Les announced he is moving to the spread offense they decided the turf would help us with speed.

The best thing about this thread is hearing from all the clueless folks who think the sun tracks directly overhead at noon even if you live this far north in the northern hemisphere.

Go out to lunch today and observe a few shadows. Science is fun!

Anybody who has ever dealt with installing solar panels knows the you point the face of the panels south (it is an incline, in case those confused about the path of the sun in earlier post are wondering)so as to get the most sun exposure. Hence the concern about shadows compromising the health of the turf particularly in the south end zone. Of course, the problem would be worse in late fall/winter.

I don't think the field is not striped because Eric "isn't into that look." I do think that he would never use paint to accomplish that look. It's not worth the risk if the paint does not completely dry or if it rains. The other thing you mentioned was mowing pattern. I do think Eric tries to stripe the field using this method, it just doesn't show up as well for night games, which is what we mostly had this year. If you go back two seasons and look at all the day games, you'll find that the field was stripped nicely. Eric does stripe the baseball field, and gets very creative when it is over seeded because it is so easy.

I heard a rumor that the South End Zone expansion was going to cast such a shadow that the turf would not going to recieve enough natural direct light to sustain it,

Sun rises in East....sets in West. Explain to me how the SOUTH endzone will have any effect on the shaddows from East to West.

Oh, Lord, please don't make me have to explain the solar system AGAIN. The equator, Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, Earth tilts on it's axis, summer and winter, etc.- read a book, look it up.

Let me ask you a question: Why does moss grow on the north side of trees? Figure that out and you'll have your answer.

Thanks, clamdip,
I'm really tiring of explaining the solar system over and over in this thread to the idots who think they're being clever by pointing out the sun goes east to west.

Hey, Braveheart, since you seem to know a good deal more about the turf than most, I have a related question: I noticed in the last 3 games, anytime there was a play in the endzone, the players seemed to be kicking up alot of something- like you see that black-rubber stuff in Dome turfs, but just a natural sandy dirt color. What was that?

I'm guessing that by the end of the season, the painted grass is dead, they don't water it b/c it would break down sooner, and maybe they spread a little sand into it to try and hold it together to make it thru the last game?

Eric Fasbender is responsible for the Tiger Stadium field, football practice fields, Alex Box field, and I'm pretty sure the softball field as well.
