I assume he is the best recruiter among d-line coaches, but how is he at teaching technique? Bringing in the kind of talent he has over his career would likely mask some coaching deficiencies, if he had any.

Is he a great recruiter and an average coach, or did LSU hit the lottery?

He's a Pete Jenkins disciple, that's enough. Jenkins is regarded as one of, if not THE best ever.

Cortez Kennedy, Leon Searcy, Russell Maryland, Warren Sapp, Bill Hawkins, Leonard Williams, Mike Patterson, and Keneche Udezi. All first round picks coached by Ed O. Dude is the best in the business at both recruiting and coaching his position.

Ed has coached more first round draft picks on the dline than any other dline coach. But nah he isn't that good.

Two of those are NFL Hall of Famers... Not bad.

It's not the lottery when you know the outcome. Man is a beast and I'm glad we finally got him on staff

Home-run no doubt, I bet Miles is thinking he wished he had him on staff years ago. I used to watch USC when he coached there because living near CA you get the late games typically after LSU is finished playing. His DLines always play above potential, there is always high energy and movement. The DLine will be very aggressive and attack, also he likes to rotate 4 at a time. I would be stunned if our defense is not better.

Orgeron is a huge upgrade on the recruiting side of things. He really might be the best there is.

He has undeniable success in getting top notch players to the next level. As someone mentioned, because he has been so successful in recruiting top notch DL, he could theoretically be a less technically good coach and still get the 5* talent he recruited to the pros... but...

quote:

All his former DL players praise him.

As much as he's highly regarded for working his butt off and making genuine connections with recruits on the recruiting trail, he's also known for doing the same thing on the practice field. I don't think his success as a recruiter or as an on the field coach is luck in any way. He works hard to get the best out of his players, and from what I've heard, the players like him and play hard for him.

All of them were All-Americans. He's an impressive coach. Plenty of big time talent never achieves the level of success his players have. Home run.

So do great coaches make the talent, or find the talent?

Cortez Kennedy, Leon Searcy, Russell Maryland, Warren Sapp, Bill Hawkins, Leonard Williams, Mike Patterson, and Keneche Udezi.

Remember Mingo, Montgomery and Anthony Johnson. 3 5* guys who never reached their potential. Regardless of how good they are rated out of high school, you still have to coach them.

Coach O is without question the best in the business when you combine the ability to recruit with the ability to coach that talent. Also a name some forget is Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. He started in front of Sapp and was going on to an All American career then got hurt. That allowed Sapp to get on the field sooner. The rock wasn't a high school stud but was going to be a high draft pick had he not gotten hurt.

Bottom line is, this was a home run hire that I wish would have happened 2 years ago.
