Someone please explain zone blocking
Simple insight- Zone is blocking an area, if your area is clean (stunt, slant), slide over and help the next guy get his area clean.
Zone run blocking can almost look like pass protect on a lot of plays. Less pancaking and more guiding D where you want them to go with footwork.
It's actually easier taught scheme than man, but road grader man blockers would have limited mobility to execute zone very efficiently.

If Grimes comes up with something called...gulp...drop tackle then I will start breaking stuff.

Didn't Mike Shanahan pioneer the zone blocking concept?

Thanks for the explanation. And the end of it explains why Hoko has struggled.

It's been around way before that. A lot of teams use both, play dependent. Mostly man scheme using some zone here and there.

Took Tepper a year to wreck the defense with his system.

I'm not a Mawae guy either since he has never even coached before.
Yep, he played 16 years in the NFL (With many Pro-Bowls) but he didn't learn enough in that time period that would make him a great OL coach.

If Grimes is going to be successful here though, he'll have to recruit OL's that Zone Blocked in high school so there wont have to be such a high learning curve.

this is what our fan base needs to do for this entire team , all the skill positions on offense is young , new blocking scheme , new interior defensive line and lots of young players all over the field .... why don't we just wait and see what this team looks like after more than three games ...

This is pretty much how I feel, just waking up at 5 in the morning the day before the game. I'll just wait to see us grow. It's really not much we can do other than switch out some personnel on defense and more spread formations and passing on offense. Everything else will have to work itself out over time.

Then why the hell did Miles hire him? Surely Miles knew that zone blocking was his specialty. If we're not gonna use the spread offense, then Grimes was a bad fit from the start. In that case it would be more Miles' fault than Grimes'.

My only thought is that they want to go more spread. I mean look at what we are doing in recruiting. We are trying to get 4 WRs a class, and 2016 has us in the thick of legit mobile/dual threat QBs. We have now gotten 3 receiving TEs plus Jeter who looks like he can do both.

Maybe they are slowly trying to change the offense, but that takes time.

I could also just be flat out wrong about going more spread, and they just got a bad hire (a guy that doesn't fit what we like to do).

He did come from VT. How could anyone not know that? After all VT is just such an offensive juggernaut. Every year they almost win 9 games.

It'd be great if they thought that too...they keep recruiting spread option offensive players and not putting in any packages to utilize that skill set. Although, zone blocking does not indicate a spread attack though.

We have looked best when lined up in shotgun sets with one RB in the backfield blocking or running. Yet, we use this set less than 25% of the time and rarely mix it up.

Our packages under Miles have always been the most predictable in the conference. Now we are just not executing our scheme very well and it is hurting the production. I guarantee you that 75-90% of defensive players and coaches know exactly what we are running on most plays based on the personnel and tendencies of the team. If I can predict it from television, the defense can as well...they spend 100's more hours prepping than me.

Granted, this team is loaded with young players. Other teams are, also. LSU has to "rebuild" while Alabama, Auburn, and other top notch teams simply "reload" with younger players and never seem to miss a beat. It's parts of this team that are blessed with seniority and experience(i.e. offensive line and linebacker leadership to some extent)that seem to be playing the worse. This team has more issues than just "younger players" I know that I've just started posting so, to all you old hands, take it easy.

Point conceded - even if it were by a single point at the last second there would be an outcry. But for the better part of 3 qtrs we were not even competitive - with State - in TS - at night - on nat'l TV.

To the call that a mere "loss" is misleading.
