LSU will start fencing off the historic Indian Mounds on football game days starting Saturday, the university announced Thursday.

The decision comes in the wake of football fans and tailgaters ignoring ropes and signs the past two weeks and climbing on the mounds, officially called the LSU Mounds.

Last week, some children used signs reading, “Please do not slide on the mounds” and “Help preserve the mounds,” as makeshift sleds on the mounds.

The LSU administration ordered the ropes removed Saturday for safety reasons.

After meeting with LSU archaeologists and anthropologists this week, the administration decided to erect temporary fencing that would be removed after each football game day.

“It’s fantastic that the entire LSU administration and faculty and students are combined in support for the preservation of the mounds,” said Patrick Hesp, LSU geography and anthropology department chairman.

They better post a policeman and be prepared for a war, because there are a lot of jack-holes who will deliberately ignore that fence.

Afterall, it's their god-given right to do whatever the hell they want at LSU on gameday.

Many of them are still pissed that they had to stop parking on the roots of the live oaks.

Next thing you know there will be rules that require litter to be contained.

They'll claim it's all part of the "Pussification of Amerika!"

FIFY

It's truly disturbing that LSU fans continue to have no regard for the beauty and/or history of the LSU campus.

We conquered the Indians.

Partying and dancing on their graves is part of the spoils of war.

Because the majority probably never spent any time at LSU outside of football games.

Boooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!

It's not even a burial ground. The Indians used to use the mounds as high ground to check if the banks from the Mississippi River had been overflowed. So the mounds have been around for 1000s of years, and we think that kids sliding down them are tearing them up? Funny, I've been coming to LSU's campus for over 30 years and they look the same to me. Go hug a tree in Berkely.

Let the kids play!!!!!!!!!!!

how exactly are the mounds being damaged. I walk by them twice a week. They look the exact same as they did 10 years ago when i got to BR.

This.

I guess putting up and taking down fencing is more cost-effective in these trying economic times than just planting some more grass.

Of course, I AM asking a lot. One of the south's few Land/Sea Grant institutions, and there's nobody there that can seem to get fricking grass to grow properly.

Ditto 25 years ago when I was a freshman. They sure don't look any different to me.

I have never seen anybody digging into the ground with shovels or by hand. Nobody said anything about shovels.

Perhaps it's because the agronomy department is selecting for the wrong traits (i.e. denisty, vigor, growth rate).

They clearly should be selecting a bermuda or st. augustine that exhibits vomit-hardiness.
