ok, you are the chief anti-pumper! your job is to be the realist in the group. you think of yourself as being on a noble mission. you use the pumper tag of honor.

so, even tho we have an elite winning %, you have mined the negatives that tear down winning.

i know, i know... tl,dr ... but, i'm not writing this for you, just for the others that agree w/ me.

so, just read my sig line:
Winners - people who tell you what they did and not people who tell you what they think you ought to do.

ha, ha, are you a winner.

Since you're in a research mood, can you find out how many 80+ yard touchdown drives LSU had this year? Bama had 4 against a pretty good defense Monday night. Les Miles basically waits for a turnover or a big kick return before we attack and try to score.

So what you're saying is first downs don't correlate to program success?

I'm glad you answered your own question.

one could make a logical argument that your post was a 1/3 combo.

Oh oh oh do points next.

LSU- 2,008 points
Opponents- 1,148 points

Give or take me fat fingering my phone calculator.

Comes out to 30.4 points a game and giving up 17.4.

Yeah, it's not like this stat could be skewed because of shorter fields from defense and special teams. That would just make too much sense.

The original 12 SEC teams going back 5 seasons. The correlation is obvious. Statistically, having a +~80 first down differential leads to a 60% winning rate which is simply average in the SEC.

By the way, Florida is apparently better than us over the last 5 years as well as obviously Bama.

shorter fields

How does Alabama, who has had the #1 defense in the nation, statistically and realistically, for about 5 years running now get so many first downs on the short fields?

LSU has around +80 differential and 77% win percentage over that time, so obviously that differential is enough to sustain a successful program.

Also there's only 2 teams around +80, hardly enough to make any statistical analysis.

So again you answered you own original question by showing LSU has sustained success with that +~80 differential.

In other words...you can't read. The top schools in the SEC have at least TWICE many first downs as us. Then there is a huge drop off before tier two, the Ole Miss tier, that's where we are. So, per statistical significance, which team doesn't belong in tier two. I'll let you guess.

They've been great at getting 3 and outs, leading to more possessions not necessarily shorter fields.

Over the last 5 years, Alabama never gave up 200 first downs in any season. LSU has allowed over 200 first downs every season in that time period.

So that's one main reason Alabama's first down differential is so much better.

Also I'm curious why the time span is only the last 5 years, when the site includes stats from the last 6 years.

Wait...so now LSU's defense in 6 times inferior to Alabama?

Which shows that first down differential doesn't = team success, since obviously LSU is tier 1 in winning percentage.

Probably because 6 years ago was the last time allowed LSU to try and move the ball on offense. Near the end of 2008, Miles said screw all that 3 phases of the game talk, we're going to try and win with only defense and special teams.
