Saw them play again the next year in Baton Rouge where LSU won 28-7, with a stellar performace by the defense and especially the play of Ronnie Estay (if my memory is serving me correctly.)

Correct. He is my neighbor actually. Very nice man.

It actually goes back to 1969 when Notre Dame finally decided that it would participate in bowls and LSU got stuck waving in the wind after a 9-1 season.

I could be wrong but I think LSU may have played for the national title in '69 had ND not lifted a self imposed bowl ban on themselves near the end of the season.

“LSU vs Notre Dame 1971”

Good game, but much less meaningful than the 1970 game where both teams were serious contenders.

Charlie Mac even stated prior to the 71 season that his defense wasn’t going to be as good as it was in 70, and it showed in the opener against Colorado where LSU surrendered 31 points to the underdog Buffaloes. Without Theisman, the 71 ND team had a mediocre offense, so it was no big deal to shut them down. That 71 LSU defense would not have been able to stop Theisman’s 70 offense.
