And it's indicative of a problem. Whit as a 3rd yr player would've also been put on skates by A'Shawn & Co. Pocic is a great O-lineman, but is out of position. He's playing center bc there's no better option, and that's on Miles' inability to be a complete recruiter. Yes, I said it.
There's more to recruiting than omelettes & closing w/Mom. You have to evaluate the roster & identify needs. Brick & Chief get a lot of hate for leaving the front 7 bare, & rightfully so. But it's ultimately on the HC. The LBs outside of two starters are atrocious.
He has never made center a priority, just sticks anyone in there, just another spot on the line, right? Wrong.
So the biggest roadblock is Bama & their defense right? What's the key for that, a big arse nose tackle. And Saban knows it. He's willing to look anywhere for that player. He targets that position bc he knows it crucial to his defense. Why Miles doesn't scour the country in search of a center is beyond me. I'm talking about the prototypical center, 6-3/6-4 w/the stout body type. I realize there are a few 6-7 centers in the league, but it's not the norm.
During Miles' tenure, the O-line, specifically center, has been underwhelming & serviceable. That's the only way I can put it. He can hide them but eventually will get exposed.
So who's the center next year? Pocic will leave or play OT, hopefully. Whoever it is will have no game time experience & we back to square one. Dodd appears soft, Clapp might be option. I'm sure just throw whoever out there & it will be fine. Sorry for the long post, just little frustrating.

Pocic is going to be an all American at center but yeah he's not any good. You know a lot more about olineman than the coaches.

He's not saying Pocic's no good, but a taller guy at center has more problems getting leverage on a thick NT due to his (the center's) higher center of gravity.

Absolutely. Name a center having a better year. One bad game doesn't erase what this oline has accomplished

Don't hate on Pocic. He will do fine against any other D. We as a unit match up well with most lines except for Bama. Our main issue on offense is not being able to attack with a complete passing game. That is on having an incomplete QB (but one who has improved and can become complete) and WRs with the dropsies.

A stable and more complete passing game and Can would call a different game and stick with the passing. CLM over rides him and goes conservative once one thing goes wrong. Fault CLM for his paranoia and post 2008 syndrome.

Not hating on Pocic at all, one of my favorite lineman. I believe he's every bit as capable at LT than Whit was/is. That's how highly I think oh him. He's just playing center out of necessity. He'd make a fine OT

I know of at least one this year, don't remember who. But saw ht/wt of starters on TV. But that's my point, if it's an issue to have a 6-7 center in the NFL, then might be an issue in college.

Really hate bringing up Bama, but their center is pretty good. Is Kelly the center they got out of Cali? Can't recall

You're going to catch a lot of shite, but the O-line has been underwhelming for years now.

dstone said it best: Did we get beat because of depth? Did we get beat because of scheme? Who cares? They both fall on the head coach.

People act like it's only Les Miles' job to give badass pregame speeches.

Again, he is a great talent and a very good offensive lineman, but realistically his height is an extreme disadvantage and there is a reason for that.

Unlike the other 4 OL, the center is having to do basically a boomerang action to block after snapping. When you are taller, as others have stated, your center of gravity is much higher and to get back to a position where you are at a strength is more difficult and takes longer. That means any NT worth his salt is going to be at a huge advantage, and it was seen in the Bama game. You saw it a bit in the UF game, but because UF doesn't have the LBers that Bama does it gets overlooked.

You'll see him struggle likely in a similar way against Ole Miss.
