Thoughts? I know coaches say all the time that they love it where they are at, but do you think Les will go for a much bigger challenge in the NFL?

i don't see what an NFL team would see in him (and i know there are articles disagreeing with me)

motivating kids and being a finisher in recruiting don't exactly translate to the pro game

He stays and becomes a legend in college football - not just at LSU. He has a want to be like his idol Bo.

saban did have some coordinator experience in the NFL and was under bill B. i'd argue he was much more involved in coordinating one side of the ball than les is right now. it's kind of different

but, it isn't TOTALLY different. yet saban's mediocrity in the NFL (along with many others) should tell NFL teams not to mess with college coaches

Except that coaches like Jimmy Johnson, Bill Walsh, Tom Coughlin, and (now) Jim Harbaugh make the reward very high for going that route. The fanbase likes it because the coach has a pedigree of success, and the reward is commiserate with the risk if you find the next Bill Walsh. Most coaches have some college experience as well. Mike Tomlin as late as 1999 was coaching in college.

Miles stays at LSU, imo. But if he leaves, it won't be for the pros.

JJ was 20 years ago.

walsh was an NFL guy who went to college for 2 years. and he joined the NFL again in 1979. he was an NFL coach from 1968 until 1977. he was a pro coach who spent 2 years as HC of stanford

coughlin was an NFL coach from 1984 to 1990. then he was HC at BC for a couple years, and went back to the NFL

harbaugh looks pretty legit. his coaching career is a bit non-traditional. also he was only in college for like 5 years. his entire career in coaching is really weird and an outlier in any argument. he's certainly not a college "lifer" though

even with saban's NFL background, he had spent a long time in college at MSU and LSU before going back to the NFL. miles was a positional coach in the NFL for like 2 years. other than that, he's been a college coach. he's a "lifer." this isn't a criticism of miles. just stating facts

the 2 games have gone away from each other in the past 10-15 years.

I think the bigger question... If he goes pro, does our fanbase support him? or rip him a new one?

He will go to Mich when the time is right...say 4-8 years from now and retires. That will be the only job he'll leave LSU for. Don't think we wants to rebuild another college program when he's sitting on a gold mine. Pro is way too risky if he doesn't succeed.

I think Les is a college guy. It appears as though he's found his spot in the national pecking order and he's fine with it. Pro? I say no. Another college? That is always a possibility. win a NC this year? Then he becomes Governor of Louisiana!

He and Chavis are at LSU for a long, long, long, long time. As long as he can continue to recruit NFL talent and replace coaches that leave for promotions, he would be here for a really, really, really long time. Basically until he decides he's done.

And, with his demeanor, I think he could last until he's in his 70s or so if he feels like it.

the way things are going with the cowboys JJones just might throw a ton of money at Les. Miles is supposedly coveted by a number of nfl teams and he has a track record with Dallas and a reportedly good relationship with the "ego"....the "want" meets the "ego."

that said....I don't think Les geauxs until he gets three natchams at LSU. just dreamn'.

Not that what I said in any way argued with what you said, except to say that it is good business even when it doesn't work out. You sort of hid the ball with your response to my post.

I responded to the Saban hire should warn people off of college coaches. There are coaches that win at both levels. Walsh was a good coordinator, won at Stanford, won in the NFL, then won at Stanford again. He could coach both games, just like Coughlin. You throw out JJ because of the time horizon without pointing out that the college to pro jump doesn't happen frequently. Then you dismiss Harbaugh as an outlier by begging the question.

Bottom line is, there are huge success stories, huge failures, and it is good business for teams to dabble in college coaches regardless of whether the move pans out.

I think he enjoys being the LSU HC.

I think he will compete for championships, next year and beyond.
