But, this mentality is the reason the NFL deserves criticism. Players need to be protected from themselves but the NFL wants to put their heads in the sand at the expense of the players.

Wrong! Everyone knows the risk. They are getting Paid like lotto winners to play a game. They have chosen the money for the risk. The riskier the job, the more the money. You the player, employee, etc decide if you want to play football for millions, dive, climb cell phone towers, or sit in a cube.

The Jets are a lucky football team. They got themselves a super star.

Most of them are out of the league in a year or two with considerably less than million dollars in the bank, and many of them already with significant health issues. Do they deserve pity? Maybe not, they get to do something most of us can only dream of doing. But the ones who earn generational type wealth, or even life changing wealth, are a minority.

In 15 years nothing will have changed.....other than a few more rule changes to protect the defenseless....The NFL will still be king and little kids will still aspire to be Brady or Moss or Julio or Cam etc etc

Participating in youth football is already declining due to health concerns. That will migrate upward through high schools and colleges, and the NFL's talent pool will evaporate. It won't happen overnight, but it will happen.

Too many poor kids in the world who can use football to ascend to millionaire dreams. Black or White or any color.

The same thing used to be true of boxing. Not so much any more. Times change. Those kids will be drawn to other sports, including soccer. Or God forbid, actually hit the books and prepare for something more attainable than an pro sports career.

Average NFL Player Salary

Since NFL teams require a 53-man minimum roster, hundreds of millions of dollars are allocated towards a player budget. While some of the highest-paid members (again, typically quarterbacks) receive multi-year contracts for millions of dollars per year, the average salary of an NFL player is only $1.9 million per year. This includes outliers such as rookies and quarterbacks who are guaranteed to make more money than other positions on the team.

I think that's life changing money.

the large point is the players cannot be protected
Exactly.

250lb men running in to each other at full force repeatedly is going to do what it does.

There are no protections against that short of changing it to the NFFL(National Flag Football League)

I'd like to think that the players can be protected with equipment and rule changes.
Physics disagrees with you.

Consider half that goes to taxes, and another 10% or so goes to your agent. So around $800k. Say you stick in the league two years, you have a $1.6MM nest egg, assuming you live like a monk and bank it all. Better than most 25 year olds, but you're not going to be living on a beach drinking margaritas for the next 50 years.

Consider that 1.6 million yielding 3% will pay 48k per year without even spending it and you surely can sip margaritas.

It's an incredibly naive, immature thing to say. It's not issue of one extreme or the other. There's a lot of suffering in between, for players, family, and friends. Head damage doesn't just cause people to die. It also turns into depression, major anger problems, and other complications. His comments are a good example of why young people need to keep their mouths shut and ears open.
