What about a statue for LSU's greatest all-time head football coach and national champion Leslie Edwin Miles?

YES I'm calling YOU CRAZY. Ichiro is NOT that well known... I will GUARANTEE you that my wife would have ZERO clue. And I will also guarantee that approximately 99.9% of the population of South America, Africa, and Australia also have ZERO clue. ETA: and probably the same for Jeter. While baseball is called "America's Pastime" it's just not that popular as it once was, and DEFINITELY not in South Louisiana, since we have no direct ties, much less GLOBALLY.
You poor soul. So the fact that your wife has no clue who a baseball player is, means nobody else does. You underestimate the global reach of baseball and if you think South Louisiana doesn't know baseball then you are the crazy one my friend.
In a 2012 ranking of the most recognizable baseball players Ichiro was ranked #5 and Jeter #1!!!
LINK
As for Ichiro being known by one name... LINK ..."Ichiro Suzuki (?? ?? Suzuki Ichiro?), often referred to mononymously as Ichiro..."
That big M-word at the beginning means: a person who is known and addressed by a single name.
quote:Vida of course is a Louisiana native which has no bearing on the discussion, but is just a cool little tidbit.
he used his given name ( written in Romaji ) on the back of his uniform instead of his family name, becoming the first player in Major League Baseball to do so since Vida Blue

... a "Garden of Champions" type area. Big statue of Mike. Statues of Shaq, Pistol Pete, Rudy Macklin, Bob Petit, Chris Jackson, Y.A. Tittle, Billy Cannon, Paul Dietzel, Ben McDonald, Warren Morris, etc.
Just for the record, only Cannon, Dietzel and Morris won championships at LSU.

We will have 2 basketball statues and no football or baseball.
My understanding is it will be 3, as HoF'er Bob Petit's statue is going to be unveiled soon. All three of those guys are iconic legends of the game, not merely great in college, which certainly lends itself to statue building.
LSU does have 3 NFL HoF'ers from long ago; Van Buren, Tittle, and Taylor.
Amazingly, I don't think there are any ex-Tigers in the ML Baseball HoF.

She could walk in my office singing one of her songs and half the office would not know who she is.
Drake could come in and half the office would not even know who he is. I've at least heard of him, but visual of him is Drake from Josh and Drake.

Why isn't Kevin Faulk's jersey retired?

They made the mistake of announcing they would put up a Jerry West statue outside the Staples Center, and then all the Kareem fans came out of the woodwork and demanded to know why there was no statue of him. So when you do this, it becomes endless.
exactly, so I'd just prefer to put up none. Retire their numbers and put up a banner in PMAC or Tiger Stadium, but we don't need statues.

If LSU's football team ever produces a player as important to his sport as Shaq, Pettit, or Maravich maybe one will be erected.

....If you are old enough, it's not that strange.
Prior to Skip Bertman's arrival in the mid 1980's, LSU baseball did not exist. Maybe a hundred people would show up at the games. LSU won just one SEC championship before Skip Bertman. No one went to games.
LSU football has been up and down. Presently we are in the longest golden age of LSU football (16 years).
From late 1970's to early 1990's, LSU was a basketball school. The PMAC was filled and rocked. For over a decade LSU never had a losing SEC season and it was invited to NCAA tournaments with two NIT berths.

I've always firmly believed that the parking lot in front of the Athletic Department should be turned into a "Garden of Champions" type area. Big statue of Mike. Statues of Shaq, Pistol Pete, Rudy Macklin, Bob Petit, Chris Jackson, Y.A. Tittle, Billy Cannon, Paul Dietzel, Ben McDonald, Warren Morris, etc. You're only available for statue after retiring, but any sport is available.
do you know how many statues would be involved? hundreds, eventually thousands. there has to be a better way to honor these guys. I also think this has the potential to be devisive; example, "how come suzy the swimmer isn't represented", "how come there are not more of this race", etc, etc
