I find it strange that LSU is clearly a huge Football and Baseball school yet

We will have 2 basketball statues and no football or baseball. Now dont take it the wrong way, Shaq and Pistol are most deserving and im happy Pistol is finally getting one. But why doesnt Billy Cannon have one? Skip Bertman??

I've always firmly believed that the parking lot in front of the Athletic Department should be turned into a "Garden of Champions" type area. Big statue of Mike. Statues of Shaq, Pistol Pete, Rudy Macklin, Bob Petit, Chris Jackson, Y.A. Tittle, Billy Cannon, Paul Dietzel, Ben McDonald, Warren Morris, etc. You're only available for statue after retiring, but any sport is available. Private fundraising only for the statues. How much would people pay to have a brick paver placed by Maravich, Tittle, Cannon, or McDonald?

We have a Shaq statue because of basketball recruiting.

We have a Pistol statue because enough people complained once the Shaq statue went up, despite the fact that the building itself is named after the Pistol.

But once you start yielding to fan base pressure on statues...

This becomes legitimate. Why don't we have a Cannon statue? Or a Bertman statue? Or a Casanova or Pettit or Faulk or Jim Taylor or Ben McDonald or whoever our most successful track star was statue? Why don't we have a garden of statues, that kids can climb on next to their parents' football tailgates?

This is the kind of nonsense you invite when you start doing this.

to be fair, the 2 guys who have statues were generational talents who had impacts on the program far outside just on the field accomplishments.

Not that it is a pre-req, but Pistol was the greatest college basketball player ever and Shaq may be the best basketball center of all time.... Sorry Cannon isn't on that level. Skip may be one of the greatest coaches of all time but he also has an entire road...

Fournette will get a statue one day if he wins the Heisman this year.

Also, no one has done more to promote this University than Shaq. As much as I hate to agree with Moscona, he is right. Shaq is one of only 2 (maybe) peoople in the world that can go just about anywhere and is immediately recognized and known by one name.

He has a road and the field named after him at Alex Box along with "statues"/plaques of all of his championships

By the way, the same thing happened with the Lakers. They made the mistake of announcing they would put up a Jerry West statue outside the Staples Center, and then all the Kareem fans came out of the woodwork and demanded to know why there was no statue of him. So when you do this, it becomes endless.

This is how they raised money for the WWII museum in New Orleans. It seemed to work there.

But it's hard as hell to find the brick you bought!

First off Shaq pretty much paid for his own statue and secondly Pistol Pete was great but Shaq is one of the most recognizable figures in the world and not just because of sports. People that have never watched a basketball game in their lives know who Shaq is. I also don't get the infatuation with statues. Why having your name on a building, street, field, or stadium not enough?

I agree. Shaq got a statue not only because he was a great player, but because he donated a lot of money to help pay for the practice facility. However, if you're going to put up statues, be consistent. Auburn has 3 for all 3 Heisman trophy winners. Same for Florida. Alabama has them for national championship winning coaches. The argument becomes legitimate: If Shaq is deserving the so are many other former greats. Maravich gets his because he was an even greater player at LSU than Shaq
