Thinking about the Beckham FG return... watching it happen, my wife wasn't aware that it was a legal play. Before the jokes start, she's actually very knowledgable.

But just for kicks, how often of an occurrence is that play? I thought it would be something like once every 3-4 years for both college and pro, but if the NCAA had to make a new statistical category for it..... guessing it's MUCH less frequent than that.

I knew it was legal and possible but never saw one returned for a TD before. I am 48 and have religiously watched football since I was 12 years old.

Pretty sure it is a very rare occurence.

Rare for a couple of reasons:

1. Not very often do folks intentionally try a long feild goal that will fall short.

2. 109 yard returns are pretty tough to do.

Someone at Clemson did it in 1968. That is the only known time it has happened

Cromartie, Vasher, and McAlister did it in the past decade or so.

So I guess it sounds like it's an extremely rare thing but there's been a spike in "recent" years?

I'm 24, so my football watching doesn't go too far beyond the past decade or so.

Didn't someone in the NFL do it recently when the wind was blowing hard and killed a FG attempt?

Cromartie did it in the NFL a few years ago, someone else did it too I can't remember who. Javier Arenas maybe?

Also, I do it all the time in NCAA 2013

Shocked that it took someone this long to mention Devin Hester's 108 yard return of a short FG.

That's what I was trying to remember. I thought it was Hester but when no one else said it I figured I was wrong.

If someone tried a long Feild goal that would be awesome.... I've only seen long Field Goals myself..

yeah, when Beckham did it Saturday night I told my son that I'd only known of Hester's return. Had never seen it other than that. I thought that was a big deal at the time because of its rarity.

I had missed Cromartie's. That's probably the most recent. I watched a video of it Sunday.

If you try to return a fg and get tackled short of the line of scrimmage you could potentially lose all of that yardage if you just opt not to return it.
