How Les Miles and a Cancer-Stricken Alabama Teen Transcended an SEC Rivalry

This has probably already been posted. I searched and couldn't find anything. And it's bleacher report. But I don't care.
Les Miles might be hard-headed and drive us all crazy as our Coach. But there's no denying that he's a good man and a great human being.

For one day last week in Mountain Brook, Alabama—a town located squarely in the heart of the rivalry between Alabama and Auburn—the city was painted purple and gold in homage of fellow Western Division rival LSU.

For 15-year-old Sid Ortis, a diehard LSU fan who was diagnosed with osteosarcoma—a rare form of bone cancer affecting around 400 kids in the U.S. between the ages of 10 and 20—last August, that’s exactly what happened in the moments after he returned home following lung surgery last Thursday.
The Mountain Brook community banded together to litter the area's streets and businesses with purple and gold balloons and ribbons on Sid’s route home from the hospital. However, Sid’s biggest surprise came in the form of a phone call from LSU head coach Les Miles.
“We realize that Coach Miles did not have to do that,” Sid’s father, Scott, told Bleacher Report recently. “He doesn’t know us from Adam. They are in the middle of spring practice. I’m sure there are a lot of other things he could be doing. For some reason, our son’s story has touched some folks.”

thanks for posting this
I didn't have the complete story - didn't know about him being in Bama !
Just thinking about the young man but I am also thinking about the mom and dad
I think Nick and Les are both good folk - I have seen Les in action - he is very much a family man

Who cares if this has been posted before, it cannot be posted enough.
For those empty souls who will be more concerned about calling it Germans, or arguing over not needing a good man to be their coach: well, they are lost, desperate and just sad. I certainly do not value their opinion, and Id venture to bet that neither does Les Miles.
The man gets the larger picture. He isnt just playing for the full 60 minutes, he's winning in life.
I couldnt be more proud of the type of class he has displayed as our coach over the years, and feel privileged that one of the few decent public figures in the world has made Louisiana his home

I was going to say there was a great thread on the sec rant about this. not to call germans, just to point out most fans on this site (and everywhere else) actually do realize football is near the bottom of the totem pole in the ranking of important things in life

Nick isnt the topic. He isnt even peripherally noted in the article.
He may be compared to every coaching move Miles makes for the remainder of his tenure here at LSU, but he has no place being compared to him off the field.

and for full-disclosure, living here in metro Birmingham I've spoken with several Alabama and Auburn fans who have read this story and commented on what a heckuva guy Les is.

Agreed. That's one of the big differences between Coach Miles and lil' nicky.

What a great story! Miles is such a good person for doing that!

As a parent I cannot imagine the anguish they face on a daily basis. Prayers for the entire family.
I really do believe most of us get that the game is a game and life is more important.
Several years ago some personal friends had a son with cerebral meningitis that we almost lost. Dad is an LSU fan and mom is a BAMA fan but the kid is all LSU. Coach Miles took the time to send him a personal email and it was awesome.
Love CLM and the class he exhibits. Great ambassador for LSU!
