Yes, our record sucked at 4-7. However, we were loaded with pure talent and we lost some real heart breakers that season and played a very difficult schedule.

The team consisted of greats such as:
Kevin Faulk, Rondell Mealey, Larry Foster, Booger McFarland, Tommy Banks, Herb Tyler, Raion Hill, Jarvis Green, Mark Roman, Ryan Clark, Fred Booker, etc...

LSU-42 Arkansas State-6
LSU-31 Auburn-19 (at Auburn)
LSU-53 Idaho-20
LSU-27 Georgia-28
LSU-10 Florida-22 (at Florida) LSU really should have/could have won this game. We dropped 2 for sure pick 6's and had 1 90 yard pick 6 called back for an off-sides.
LSU-36 Kentucky-39 LSU lost on a last second field goal
LSU-41 Mississippi State-6
LSU-31 Ole Miss-37 OT (at Ole Miss)
LSU-16 Alabama-22 Alabama scored their points really late and they whole on-side kick ordeal
LSU-36 Notre Dame-39 (at Notre Dame) Once again, Notre Dame scored really late and Herb Tyler was knocked out of the game
LSU-14 Arkansas-41 (at Arkansas)

So, we lost 3 in the last minute or so, 1 in overtime, and 1 by one point. I know it is a stretch, but they very well could have won all of their games.

that's a pretty convincing score... So the best they would have done would have been one loss

They could have been really good without a certain defensive coordinator. It was such a shame to see Faulk and Tyler go out like that.

That was the game Craig Nall played due to Herb Tyler's injury @ Notre Dame. We threw in the towel at that point. But yeah, I guess you are right.

I still have ulcers when I think about that season. Great offense, no defense.

Ah didn't know that... I'm a little too young to remember before the seasons before '02

they'd just suffered loss #6 to ND and couldn't go to a bowl. this was the old 11 game schedules, no going 6-6 and making it to Shreveport. I think the team kinda checked out at that point.

Remember Idaho was the "hurricane" game with Georges approaching. Was supposed to hit us direct and be Mother of all Storms, we evacuated for first time. It veered east to Mobile as a bad class II.
Next week UGA and a young QB Quincy Carter beat us and game really wasn't as close the score
I went to the game at UF, was a miserable frustrating affair though they were pretty mad about year before!
Kentucky and Hal Mumme
OM was Halloween weekend and we came just inches short of goal line in OT!
Gumps
Could have won this, Booty had long pass in his hands in EZ at the final gun, he dropped!
Ark was a debacle in miserable conditions in LR!

A truly frustrating season!

And Larry Foster dropped an easy TD pass in the Ole Miss loss in the OT. The Rebels had missed their PAT, so LSU could have easily won this one, too.

the hell it wasn't. it was 21-21 at the half. we just couldn't get the ball back from em one more time in the 4th qtr to try a game winning drive. Carter was making plays to keep their last drive alive with Booger all over him.

I've always said 1998 LSU was the best 4-7 football team in NCAA history.

Yeah it was closer then I gave credit, I think we had some lucky TD catch (Ricardo Washington?)to tie it, maybe just seemed game was always away from us due to all the plays QC kept making!

Reggie Robinson "caught a miraculous touchdown pass with 14 seconds to play in the first half against Georgia; Herb Tyler's pass went through Larry Foster's hands, but Robinson gobbled it up just before it hit the turf."

It was cold as a son of a bitch IIRC.....I seem to remember holding a wet car flag outright for a few minutes and it damn near froze in place.

That UGA game hurt. The team was ranked 10-20 the previous two seasons--seemed about to break through--and started 98 in the top 10 until that loss.
