How do you think Auburn feels about Steele/Craig swap?

I find it humorous that most LSU fans were relieved when Steele departed but just a little embarrassed it was to a division rival for a second year in a row. Once Aranda was hired the faithful rejoiced and was pretty unanimous in their approval. Without a doubt LSU ended up with an upgrade at DC. Finding out that Steele's brother works in the AU athletic department and that the Alabama state retirement system factored into the equation made Steele's departure even more palatable. In the football world, especially with recruits, LSU upgraded the position with a consensus "Top 10" hire. Our biggest concern will be how long can we keep him before he is offered a head coaching job somewhere.

When our receivers coach departed I don't think there was a big concern amungst the fan base. Hiring Craig from AU was a surprise because he is an AU favorite son and had just pulled in a remarkable WR class for them. Again, very much an upgrade for us - especially as a recruiter. (Assisting with QBs is a nice bonus). When Craig threw out the "not a lateral move" line it was icing on the cake/salt in the wound depending on which side of the fence you are on.

So far, Aranda has had been a positive influence on recruiting simply based on his reputation as a defensive genius and his scheme. There is no doubt that Craig has been a positive influence on recruiting with 3 top 30 WR commits since his hire.

As an LSU fan I am happy with the "trade". Wonder how it is viewed on the plains?

Most everyone I came into contact with thought Steele should be fired into space. When Auburn paid us to take him, there was much rejoicing. Not sure where your narrative came from in paragraph one. Auburn and Steele's buyout deferred the extra money we had to pay Aranda. So basically, Auburn took our biggest deficiency on the coaching staff and paid the amount it took in extra salary to get the replacement.

In my opinion Les got the ok to pursue Aranda from Alleva and Aranda was already a done deal so Les told Steele hey Auburn is on the phone and you might want to hear what they have to say.

The only thing better about Steele leaving would have been if he went to Alabama over Auburn

this is bogus. I can't understand why it's still brought up. that retirement system is no great shakes, esp for folks in the income bracket Steele is in.

while we'll never know exactly why Steele left it's probably very simple; like more money; longer contract, family, likes Alabama, etc, etc. and we can't discount that he had a very mediocre year at LSU and Les Miles is not going to let that continue for long.

Not one single LSU fan had an ounce of embarrassment that Steele went anywhere.

Only blind, ignorant fans had any concern that Chavis left. Chavis fits Einstein's definition of insanity perfectly.

I agree because I think Alleva wanted to get rid of Miles if he could and he was going to until the administration above him killed the idea because of the way it would look. That's a whole different topic but Alleva understands now that Miles is here to stay barring a disastrous season, which will not happen, so he is giving him all the resources he needs to succeed understanding that this team has the potential to be special.

Steele already had money in the system. It makes sense.

Steele is 58. In the Alabama system, age 62 with 10 years is eligible for retirement. He would be looking at nice six figure check every year for life.

Alabama retirement system allows you to buy years from other state retirement systems. So say seven years in Bama, 7 more years in South Carolina/Florida. (Clemson& FSU). That would be over 30% of his highest salary for life.

I thought Steele was a joke from the day he was hired. I also thought that our WR's dropped a bunch of balls last year that are usually caught. In watching videos I absolutely love Craig's enthusiasm. I'm much more confident in the LSU 2016 staff than I was in the 2015 staff.

probably not. retirement plans almost always have top limits. and much of the income he makes is probably not state salary but booster supplemented like at LSU.

I just don't see 10 yrs service providing that much income. maybe it was a minor factor but I think it was a face saving red herring.

OP put this out about three hours ago and a bit surprised not one Aubie has responded. I guess I cannot blame them. On paper it doesn't look like a fair swap, but of course it wasn't really a trade one for the other.

It's a lost cause for them to comment. They know they got burned!
