Any who has warm feelings toward Dinardo should be reincarnated as a Tulane fan.
I HATED his last two years with Tepper and it was definitely time for him to go - BUT...nobody can ever take away the victory against Florida in Tiger Stadium, the goal posts coming down, etc. It felt like winning an NC. I believe that was LSU's first victory ever against a #1 team as well. Also, we had the three straight bowl victories (which was a first at the time) and the fact that he had a winning season in his first year after Curley seemed like a miracle. Also, with the shorter seasons, I think our 10-win year with him was only about our 5th ever at that time. So there were some great memories there as well. He also gave Bama their worst loss ever at Bryant Denny (27-0). It may still stand today - I'm not sure. That was a fun game to be at...

I remember him as my substitute teacher at McKinley High in 2001-2002. Dude went from being high profile college coach to making $60/day for EBRP Schools System
Wow.
I doubt he needed the money. I started this thread with an admitted fond memory of DiNardo. In reading the responses, I heard a lot of people say how much he loved this community, etc.
The fact that he substitute taught tells me about all I need to know. Good dude.
Thanks, Coach D, for laying down an awesome foundation.

As a 3rd and 4th year LSU undergrad student during the 1998 and 1999 seasons and watching our asses literally get (predictably) pillaged by the likes of the UK's and Ole Miss's in consecutive seasons, I find it hard to have any sympathy for the man.
I completely get that, but here is my response to that:
Football is a game of inches - a couple of inches each way severely distorts how some games, seasons, coaches are perceived.
Here we go - in 1999 (by far Dinardo's worst season), we lost 8 games in a row, and, in fact, Dinardo's last 8 games as LSU's head coach - before that string he was 32-16-1 through 4 seasons and the first 2 games of 1999.
During that final stretch, he loses by 1 point @ UGA, and 1 point @ Mississippi State. So, essentially 4 points in 2 games, he might have coached the last game (still no bowl) and finished 5-6 in 1999, which still might have gotten him fired, but who knows? We still got crushed by by Auburn, 41-7.
Flash forward to the next season - Saban loses his third game as LSU's head coach, to UAB. We take Tennessee and Mississippi State to OT (both at home) and win both games. SO, 2 points (1 in each game) in regulation of both of those games, and LSU likely finishes 5-6, with no bowl game in 2000. We still got crushed by Florida, 41-9.
Think about it. Overall, those seasons are VERY similar, except for the outcome of 2 games in each seasion, and a combined 6 points shift potentially could have made them objectively identical, for all practical purposes.

I remember the MSU game. If I'm remembering correctly, that's the game where their quarterback fell to his knees on about the 1 yard line and then dove into the endzone and the refs gave him a touchdown.
It was the weirdest feeling I've ever had as an LSU fan. On the one hand, I was pissed that we were screwed by the refs. On the other, I realized that it was about the last nail in the Dinardo coffin and we would be getting rid of Tepper.
Dinardo is still bitter about his firing. Joe "University Lakes" Dean had promised him another year -- which is why he was so cavalier about keeping Tepper -- only to have Emmert come in and fire him himself.
Thank God for Emmert.

Stubborn (or loyal, depending on how you look at it), to his detriment.

I remember going to see Titanic, in BR, while dating my now-wife (she wanted to see it).
Packed theater. Gerry and his wife walk in. The place erupts into a standing ovation. He seemed embarrassed and sat down in the front row.
I won't forget that nor will I forget the games you mentioned especially FL 1997. Or the week after getting drunk at the Law School hats/canes party, then attending that shitshow of a game, drunk off my arse from cheap keg beer and no carry-in booze that day.

I read somewhere that Dinardo almost became a recruiting headhunter in 2000 but ended up getting a job coaching that Birmingham XFL team.

Dinardo's reign at LSU is stone cold proof how much MORE goes that goes into managin a program than just recruiting. As those of us who followed the team back then remember, Gerry was a good recruiter. I was glad to see 9 of his recruits obtain a National Championship in 2003.

As a fricktard.
Stubborn arse that let Tepper cost him his job.
Being blown the frick out by UT in his last game at Vandy
Not running Collins on 4th down against auburn, when he had a 2000 yard game.

brought back the magic i.e Kevin Faulk, stubbornness with keeping coaches that were ineffective i.e. lou tepper

Has anyone mentioned those god awful all purple uniforms they wore against kentucky?

1.) Replaced Carl Reese with Lou Tepper.
2.) Removed the Tiger Eye from mid-field
3.) Started all the nonsensical "We can win in any color jersey" BS.
4.) Did I mention he replaced Carl Reese with Lou "It will take 5 years to fully implement my defense" Tepper and refused to admit and correct the mistake.

Huh?
Lou Tepper was terrible, yes.
The "Eye" was tired after 5 losing seasons. It was sort of a sad vestige of 1980s semi-glory.

I remember Dinardo as a delusional paranoid coach who couldn't improve the "kick" game for 4 years, who excelled at delay of game penalties, whose teams could compete with top 10 opponents one week & lose to bottom feeders the next, who thought watching game film of 1985 Colorado was an excellent way to prepare for 1999 SEC opponents, who once ran a fake punt on 4 & 18 to the upback against one of Spurrier's best Florida teams (at which Spurrier turned his back in laughter), who took substitution strategy's from Idaho, who simply could not hire competent coordinators, who won with Curly's recruits but lost with his own, who complained incessantly about having to recruit students that were academically challenged and left us with roughly 65 scholarship player.
Other than that he was a great coach. I mean he did get Kevin Faulk & beat Florida.

Yeah, I mentioned them. They were ugly, but still not as bad as our performance that day. One of the worst ever...

I had a good laugh reading that - I don't even remember that. Back then, UF kicked our azzes so bad anyway, it was probably worth a shot - one less play with UF's offense not on the field.
As for the recruits, his main recruits were really the guys that carried LSU in those first three good years - Faulk, Herb Tyler, Booger, etc.

Smartest thing he did was cancel the long standing seriess with A&M. Helped Lsu by not starting with a loss every year. Where is our money for cancelling by the way?
Great restaurant and past client. Loved cashing those LSU checks. Now they say Ruffino's.

It was one of the white out games. I think it was raining.
....lets not forget the Bama game in 98...3 missed field goal: bounced off the left upright, bounced off the right upright, & for good measure bounced one off the crossbar.
Lost 22-16.
