These players aren't taught much about transition situations anymore because they've been so much less common in the game recently than when I was a kid. On a 2-on-1, it's best to trail slightly, so if the dribbler is defended well, the trailing player is automatically open for a mid-range jumper 10 feet behind.

What? On a 2-on-1 the players should be attacking different sides of the basket. A 2-on-1 should result in a layup 95% of the time.

The lack of scoring in CBB wasn't due to teams being able to get away with hand-check fouls, it was due to guys simply being unable to knock down open jumpers.
The two are related. Officials have been far more lenient in the past few years than 20 years ago on physical, away-from-the-ball contact, making it increasingly hard to get an open shot, leading to fewer open mid-range shots in the game. Being that they happen so much less often in the game, players have placed much less emphasis on practicing those shots, leading them to be poorer shooters.

It's not like they didn't miss, they didn't shoot much better than we did.
70% to 60%. If LSU had shot 70%, LSU wins.

How many calls today were off the ball? Even the announcers said the focus is on the ball handler. You have no clue what you are talking about.

Free throws are undoubtedly why we lost this game. But I'm more pissed about where they said Hickey stepped out (close), and the travel when the UMass player jumped over the half-court line at the end
Bummers, both of them. shite happens.

I almost commented earlier, but this game being during work time contributed to it's length. Way to many slackers at work are free to post as opposed to it being a night game.

But a good amount of interest has been shown, which is good, considering last year LSU baseball mid-week games in February were drawing more td traffic than LSU basketball SEC games were.

Johnny is doing a great job at injecting some enthusiasm in the program.

i say let's put this behind us I think ballscaster has some valid points and hopefully players adjust and play better. The future is exciting for LSU basketball. We need to improve at the FT line but I suspect that will come. LSU is an NCAA team and could make some noise in it.
frick yeah.

If LSU shot 40 free throws, 60% wins us the game. FACT.

The travel no-call was more questionable, I'll give you that.
No, that one was textbook bad. He picked up the ball and then began what otherwise would have been a legal double-stop.

(I'm calling them "Stringer" and "Hickey" but I don't remember if it was those two players fyi)

Stringer had the ball, attacking the basket. There was a defender desperately trying to get back to make a play. There was Hickey, almost in a straight line going through Stringer and Hickey. That's a bad place for Hickey to be because if Stringer needs to pass, he can't pass to Hickey because he's effectively blocked by the defender. If Hickey trails slightly--not directly behind Stringer, but from the other side of the basket and further away--then the defender can't possibly defend both players, and Hickey can attack the bucket knowing he has an easy pass to make if he needs to. Players never seen to learn that anymore, and they need to.

My theory on the inevitable comeback of the midrange jumper has nothing specifically to do with today's game, but with the game in general over the past couple decades. Don't be a dick.

What are you talking about? Are you talking about Hickey and Quarterman late in the game? If you're so adamant about how they screwed up, at least know who screwed up.

Sorry. Game was on silent. Office. I'm extremely busy, as you can tell.
