If your D is good with Vanderbilt players it must be coaching. It is easy to have a good D with Alabama players.

On a scale of 1-10 he's probably between 1 and 10.

They took Ohio State to double OT and held them to 17 in regulation. 31-24.

Ohio State scored 42 in regulation against Lord Saban.

I think he is a good defensive coach. It is difficult to gauge his recruiting skills at Vandy and one year at PSU. I'd much rather have him than some mentioned for the job.

He turned smart kids at Vandy into a top 20 defense; that's good coaching.

Wasn't his D in 2013 at Vandy ranked ahead of LSU's?

They only had 2 games this season where the opponent gained over 300 yeards.

Wasn't his Penn St. defense low on depth too? I'm not sure since they were on probation just the season before

Excellent coach. Would be a great hire. Understudy of mike Tomlin. Vandy d was stout with not much. Best d in big 10 this year. Yale graduate. Very sharp. Upgrade over fatchief

Pretty damn good by the numbers. I'm pretty heavy into advanced statistics / analytics. Here are some numbers I have compiled.

FootballOutsiders.com has a few advanced metrics they use to evaluate teams, here are his rankings the last 3 seasons on the two most popular ones S&P and FEI.

(National ranking out of 128 D1 Teams)

S&P Ratings
2014 PSU 12th
2013 VANDY 47th
2012 VANDY 41st

FEI Ratings
2014 PSU 8th
2013 VANDY 53rd
2012 VANDY 35th

Here are some numbers I compiled on my own that I think are good measures of success.

Tackles For Loss
2014 PSU 20th
2013 Vandy 29th
2012 Vandy 10th

Opposing Passer Rating
2014 PSU 2nd
2013 Vandy 23rd
2012 Vandy 6th

Rushing Yards Per Attempt
2014 PSU 2nd
2013 Vandy 64th
2012 Vandy 39th

Opponent 3rd Down Conversion Rate
2014 PSU 6th
2013 Vandy 41st
2012 Vandy 27th

Red Zone TD Percentage
2014 PSU 13th
2013 Vandy 78th
2012 Vandy 7th

Penn States defense was one of the best in the nation in nearly every statistic imaginable, and you have to factor in the talent disadvantage he had while at Vanderbilt and still put up very favorable numbers.

When all the candidates starting leaking he was the one I was most interested in, took the time to make this post so others could understand why.

He is a very smart person and comes from a football family. His brother was OC at UNC when we played them in Atlanta. Shoop is probably not looking at LSU as a stepping stone to a college HC. He is probably on the ladder to the NFL. He prefers the 4-3 defense which is what we run now. He is an awesome DB coach and has put players in the NFL. He is really good at coaching the MLB eventhough he coaches the DB's. For the 4-3 to work, there has to be dominant play by the MLB and he will make that position dominate.
