Tubby won a national championship at Kentucky. He never won less than 20 games at Kentucky. In fact, over his 21 seasons as a head coach, he has won 20+ games 18 times. He was 263-83 (.760) at Kentucky. His overall coaching record at Tulsa, Georgia, Kentucky and Minnesota is 486-209 (.699).
Smith has run clean programs. He knows the SEC. His teams at Kentucky were always disciplined, fierce and competitive. They always fought to the last second of games. I would favorably compare his record against all of the popular names being bandied about and his would be superior in comparison. Has any of the others won a national title? Who has a better winning percentage (.699)? Who has a higher percentage of 20+ winning seasons (.814)? Who has won the SEC multiple times? Who has been SEC and National Coach of the Year multiple times? Who has been to the Sweet 16 and Final 4 multiple times? Who has rebuilt programs multiple times? He is an excellent X's and O's coach. Tubby's the one!
The hiring of Tubby Smith by Alleva would be a slam dunk, grand slam home run hire! And he is available. He was rumored to be interested in the Arkansas and North Carolina State jobs. Minnesota is an outpost in the Big 10. Look behind the names and look at the records and Smith is head and shoulders above the rest.
Some of Smith's accolades:
"In NCAA Tournament play, Smith owns the fifth-best winning percentage among active coaches, trailing Michigan State's Tom Izzo and Duke's Mike Krzyzewski, among others, with a sterling 23-9 record".
"Even more impressive, Smith has won 78 percent of his games at Kentucky, averaging more than 27 wins per season. In the SEC Tournament, he's 12-2 at UK, and he has won a league championship six times in his 12 years as a head coach".
"Tubby Ball," a system of solid defense and rebounding, combined with his chess-match style of coaching, was on display.
On March 23, 2007 Tubby Smith was announced as the 16th head basketball coach of the Minnesota Golden Gophers Men's Basketball program. Since then, Smith has amassed 80 victories on the Gopher sideline, the most in a coach's first four years in the history of Minnesota basketball.

He would have been a decent hire 5 years ago. Not so sure about now.

Did he always? Why did he leave Kentucky?

Never mind. I googled.
"As the years passed and none of Tubby's teams returned to the Final Four, the grumblings grew louder. Fans didn't like his style of play, which was much more focused on defense instead of the run-and-gun, pressing, quick shooting style of previous years. Many top recruits considered attending UK... but signed elsewhere. Wildcat players were getting into trouble with the law on a recurring basis. Still no Final Fours in sight, and very few Sweet Sixteens. Coach Smith earned the nickname "Ten Loss Tubby" after the Wildcats went several years in a row with double-digit losses, many of which were to teams they should have beaten. Finally, the past two seasons brought fans an unheard of travesty; their beloved Wildcats had lost four times in a row to Vanderbilt, of all teams."
Just what we need, a HC recruits don't want to play for. Sound familiar?????

Always. He left because they were not happy with his 20+ wins per year and .760+ win percentage. He was not appreciated.

From where did you get that information? Seems like something a Ranter would post. It is someone's opinion and obviously not a fan of Tubby.
Look at his record and see that it doesn't match that description. I guarantee you LSU fans would be extremely happy with the last 5 years of Tubby Smith's tenue at Kentucky. Compared with Coack K for reference. Tubby had two Elite 8 appearances and Coach K had two Sweet 16 and one Final 4 appearance during that 5 year span.
Tubby Coach K
2007: 22-12 22-11
2006: 22-13 32-4 (16)
2005: 28-6 (8) 27-6 (16)
2004: 27-5 31-6 (4)
2003: 32-4 (8) 26-7
As relates to recruiting, he must have done enough to have the record he has (.760). Tom Izzo is not the greatest recriter either, but he wins with the players he recruits. Isn't that the bottom line?
