Hickey needs to switch to jump shot free throws.

He's 46% from the line. You kidding me?
He's a mediocre jump shooter but he's a jump shooter nonetheless. It would feel more natural.

I would laugh, but if he made more I wouldn't care.

Yeah but I had this thought way earlier this season.

Idk why more people dont do this.

With his ability, shooting 46% shows a lack of work ethic. I love the kid, but he has to move that up towards 70% if he ever wants to play any kind of professional ball. It's too important for the PG to be able to make the freebies.

If not for some players' gigantic fragile egos, this would be much more common. There is no reason why Dwight Howard and the likes of Hickey shouldn't try it out.

I don't necessarily know that this is the case. I have no idea how many free throws he shoots, but it is probably mental for the most part...or something goofier like the yips. Either way, he has no shot at playing at the next level unless he fixes it.

FT are mostly mental and in the meantime, other than spending an hour or more a day (not saying he shouldn't but I don't know his schedule) practicing just FTs, relying on muscle memory is the one thing he could do right now that should improve his numbers.

Saw the guy from Wisconsin do this, it was hilarious.

I am pretty sure he could try shooting off of one foot and it couldn't hurt at this point.

Just saw this on PTI, I always wondered if it was even legal, but I guess when u jump as long as you land behind the free throw line its ok. I would try it if im hickey, at least it wouldnt look as gay as a granny shot

He shot 55% last year. You can work on the mental aspects of free throw shooting also. He obviously hasn't work on either part. How do you get mentally tough for free throws? You run laps then shoot them. Once you show your body and head that you can shoot them even when you are tired, you believe in yourself. There is no reason for someone of his ability to shoot under 50%.
I also think this is something he needs to do over the off-season, not right now. But if he doesnt shoot at least 60% next year I think it really shows a lack of commitment to fine tuning his craft.

according to Roy Hill, you can jump shoot from behind the free throw line and land inside, as long as you make the bucket. If you miss, it will be lane violation, but if you make it, being over the line after the jump wouldn't give you an advantage.
An airborne player's position on the court is where his feet last touched the ground.

Hell, then he can probably jam it from the free throw line.

I mean like incidentally crossing the line after a shot, they probably wouldn't count it against you. but if you try a standing long jump out there that's a lane violation for sure
ETA: just looked it up and apparently the NBA adopted the rule that the shooter can't cross the line until the ball hits the rim....as a result of reports that Wilt Chamberlain could dunk free throws

I always thought it was illegal. It doesn't make sense why more players dont' do it.
