Wasn't at game - was he shaking off the pitches? Seemed like at least 3 0-2 counts produced 3 runs.

So the 0-2 2 run bomb was supposed to be a fastball?

Hess has no movement on his fastball! and he doesn't throw a "heavy" pitch

Paul Mainieri says he’ll go back to Zack Hess “100 times out of 100” if the same situation comes up again.

It’s unclear if he can pitch Tuesday after the extended outing today, however #LSU

The fastball has a better whiff rate than any other pitch in baseball. There’s nothing wrong with an 0-2 fastball. It just can’t be cock high over the middle of the plate. Where Hess seems to like throwing them for some reason.

Irrelevant. Is location not pitch selection.

He also said Hess is our Friday night starter, period.

I have a problem with an 0-2 fastball from a guy who has poor command of it. Notice how often they whiffed at his slider. There is just no reason not to go slider in that situation. If I have a guy with better command, I might think differently in that situation.

He threw 97 the for the second strike and made the batter look silly. After seeing that you absolutely should go back to the fastball, just have to locate better

There was no reason to speed up the hitters bat. He had just had a fastball absolutely blown by him. A fastball elevated out of the zone would’ve been an out or at worse a foul ball. At that point you can change the eye level with a slider in the dirt.

The fastball was a good call there. It was just terrible placement.

I can’t blame Dunn for Hess not being able to get his fastball out of the zone.

Don’t understand why he didn’t go with Fontenot and Beck longer. This game could’ve locked up a regional. Worrying to much about Tuesday. Win Today and Tuesday is irrelevant. Should have gone with Beck and Fontenot longer and finish with Peterson.

Can’t be said better. It wasn’t about pitch selection. It was 100% lack of execution.

Normally isn't on a 0-2 count a waste pitch then come back with a curve or a slider? That was a big game to give away like that.

So what would you have called in that situation?

How do you know they wanted that location ?(I was at the game and couldn't see where Garza was set up)

Waste pitch does not mean literally wasting a pitch. You have to throw it close enough that the batter wants to swing

Guess I would have used Skip's philosophy... waste it low and away in the dirt when you have a batter on the ropes! never a fast ball down the gut!
