Anyone know what year LSU first put names on the backs of the jerseys?

Early 70s. Look closely at the at the back yoke, and see if you can tell if a nameplate was once stitched there.

doesn't necessarily mean that. when the jerseys are released to the public, they remove the name plates from the back. they still do that now

No nameplate, so maybe just a practice jersey... That or else it predates LSUSports.net's roster records.

In any case, thanks for all the insight.

I plan to contact the five players identified as wearing the number during the decade leading up to when I received it via social media to ask if anyone of them gave a jersey to the guy who gave it to me.

Thanks again to everyone who helped and Geaux Tigers!

it's against NCAA rules to release a jersey with a name plate. they always remove them. they always sell game used jerseys, but the name plates are always removed. that jersey does not pre-date the 70s, when we started putting last names on the back

for reference, bert jones from 72

and i feel like we started using Russell athletic in the mid 80s

Didn't know that. Thanks! I guess that makes sense given licensing issues/amateurism, etc.

Good to know it might still be a game jersey.

What year(s) did he play?

The rosters listed on LSUSports.net only go back to 1979.

There was a player mid-late '80s named Mickey Harris who wore 31 I think. Backup RB from St. Pauls in Covington I think? Mostly played special teams. I vaguely recall this because a relative of mine, Gary Cunningham, was his childhood buddy and signed w/LSU same year as Harris, and GC did play at SP. GC ended up dropping out of college before playing a down, was a tremendous HS RB and LB.

In fact, I'm thinking Gary was issued 31 first, Harris may have taken it after Gary dropped out.

Harris is now president of So Cal LSU Alumni, fwiw

Harris

I played FB and basketball at SPS in the mid-late 90's.

Are you sure he was 31 at LSU? I didn't see his name next to the number on any of the rosters from the 80's.

Not sure he was 31, I am pretty sure Gary was issued 31. And I THINK Harris ended up wearing it. I'll keep digging. I know Harris lettered 4 years, special teams mostly.

Oh, and Harris did go to SP, inducted into SP sports HoF in '09.

Harris was #30 apparently. LINK

How cool would that have been if the jersey was from a fellow St Paul's alum?!

Yep, looks like you are correct: Harris Contact

Maybe you can contact him at the link and see if he knows if Gary wore 31. Maybe it's from Gary's only fall practice ('83)! I remember the Times-Pic running an article about "diaper buddies" Cunningham and Harris joining LSUs backfield that at the time featured Hilliard-James. They were in their LSU practice unis, I KNOW Gary was in 31. I was 10 at the time and clipped the article. I have to look, I may still have it somewhere. I'm serious, I keep everything!

Gary's dad was Terry Cunningham, who was in the car biz in NO and later Northshore (since has passed). Not sure if that helps any...

Good luck finding out, post back when you figure out who it is.

LSU had the player last name on the game jerseys going back to the early 70's and has ever since. Was too young to remember if they did in the 60's.

I do know that the Equipment Managers used to stamp the names on the back when they were still using the Russell Athletic jerseys, so I'm sure that some of these older game jersey's survived without actually having been stamped and used in a game...........

lsufball19 pointed out that the NCAA requires that names be removed from all official memorabilia before being released to the public. This is likely the reason there is no name on the jersey.

It's the same reason why the EA Sporta NCAA Football series of video games was discontinued.

I distinctly remember the gentleman who gave it to me stating that it was a game jersey. It appears to have grass stains as well (although that could come from practice as well). He was a very prestigious doctor on the LSU board and he'd have no reason to lie to an eight year old boy about a gift the boy wouldn't fully appreciate for years anyway.

I don't get the hate for Welter. It's not like he tried to suck, or just said frick it, I'm not going to try my best. It's not his fault the coaches started him as long as they did.

He could've gone to McNeese and been a stud, but he aimed high and chose to go to LSU and gave it everything he had to help the team win. He didnt pan out, but for fans to shite on him the way they do here is wrong. The kid tried. If there is a need to assign blame to someone blame Chavis for poor evaluation and personnel decisions.

Here is a pic of a jersey from 1987. If you can get an up close image of the tag, I will have this guy compare it to his, maybe the tags changes year to year

The jersey above and this photo of a purple 87 jersey appears they didn't have the solid panels on the sides (cannot tell 100% on the white jersey)
