Let's pretend in this scenario, that the ball is not going over their head, but is instead kicked short and bouncing. If you are at the 15, and you charge forward at a ball that you judge will be at the 25, but then takes a bounce to put it somewhere beyond the 15. Regular kickoff, it is in the end zone, dead ball. In the penalty scenario, the ball now has a chance to be live for 15 more yards, which you are responsible for. If you rush the ball and misjudge its distance, its a live ball, so you hesitate until you are more sure of where it is heading.
The kicker is just as screwed in either scenarioquote:
If a kicked-off ball goes untouched into the end zone and then is recovered by a member of the kicking team, it's a touchdown for the kicking team.

Well, its the same logic that the other return guy backing you up has less ground to cover on the non penalty scenario, and if it is not fielded cleanly in the endzone its a touchback either way

Anything behind the UK 45 yd. line (which is where this ball ended up) would be considered "good". It's unrealistic to assume that UK would not have returned a regular kickoff to at least the 40 yd. line, AND the potential for an even longer return would've been in play. From an "odds" perspective, I thought the squib kick was a safer bet against a bigger return - it just happened to end up better than even planned.

I'm not about to read all of this, but I agree. I do think the original kick (meaning before all the bounces) was too short, and if the bounces were more unfriendly, that could have been problematic. It was a good call in the abstract though.

This thread and all the idiotic negative 'tards posting about how bad a decision the squib kick was is a perfect illustration of how unreasonable the Miles haters are...
Grasping at straws is an understatement compared to what is actually going on.
It was the correct decision that worked out great for the team that was currently up by 3 TDs resulting in 3 more unexpected pts before the half...but the Miles haters are trying to figure out a way to use this to bash Miles...classic

When people bring up specific moments like this, I wonder what their intention is. I mean all that can be said is that it was a bad decision. Really, what more can you say?

you don't squib kick every kick off because you leave yards on the table when you squib kick. Field position is important for the majority of the game. In this particular scenario the coaches decided to trade off field position for less risk of a return given that the half was winding down.

There were 44 seconds left... not 5... not 10, 15, nor 20.
44 is quite a bit of time when your opponent is at midfield or better.
