For as many times as we kick it out of the endzone we should give up less, Imo.

Oklahoma got one shot and Avery saved us from a td, and it was still a big return, there were others too

I think our ST are doing well.
Returning punts isn’t worth the risk many times when you have a competent offense. I got KO’d in high school on ST. I don’t really understand why we wouldn’t let some fresh legs field these balls considering the talent on the sideline. Palmer seemed electric enough when he got his shot, and risking CEH wouldn’t be my preference, but these coaches know more than I ever will about football.

Not bad, but average. All of it could be and should be better, with our roster. We used to destroy teams on special teams, the last two years haven't been above avg at best.

That's all I got, just a discussion about an area that we can improve in, and could help us win the Natty. There's always a big onside kick or fake punt or big return in these games.

We're all bored as shite and are ready to finish this unreal season, that I will never forget for the rest of my life , we have to win this game. The story is too good. That's what we can agree on. This season has made me cry multiple times.

Remember when Stingley fumbled the punt on our own 20, Auburn recovered and put it in the endzone for 7.......in a game we only won by 3. I remember. Unless the gunners aren’t within 20 yards of him, let him fair catch it all day long.

I think we handled the the big situation onside kick against Bama just fine

Also ever think maybe the fact that we score 40, 50, 60 points a game means the kickoff team is on the field a hell of alot more giving them more chances?

Remember last year when LSU muffed a punt and A&M scored right quick? And we ended up losing by one possession?
Fair-catch that crap and don’t be a hero.

Not sure why anyone would want someone to return anything and risk injuries/turnovers with the offense we have...

The coaches on This team have completely given up on the return game. Given up, isn't the best word really, cuz they haven't really ever tried in the first place, this year.

I just think our offense is so good, that trying to make a play on special teams isn’t really necessary.(blocked punts are rare, but running into the kicker is that extend drives are pretty common;Kick off returns for touchdowns are rare, but blocks in the back or holding penalties that back you up on your goal line happen quite a bit.

It’s just essentially controlling your controllables.

With an offense like this, all we need to do is make the catch and then set up shop and start moving downfield.

Not a matter of giving up on special teams... just playing smart football

No chance of a turnover on return.... with our offense
Why chance it

Would you rather swap this offense with the 2011 and 2012 one for special teams?

I agree. When you have no electric offense, then you depend on special teams for that spark. This year there is no reason to chance injury or a fumble. Just get the ball in Joe's hands and let him do what he does.

The player I feel the worst for is our punter. Poor guy barely gets to play. But he's done pretty good when given the opportunity. If we're up a few scores, then I bet we don't even try to block a punt and instead play protection just to not have an accidental running or roughing the kicker.

I mean the coaches have obviously decided to have the returner fair catch kickoffs no matter what. If thats not, not trying, IDK what is.

Nick Saban famously said that he was satisfied if every offensive possession ended with a kick. The implication is that even a punt can be a successful series.

Two subtle points:
#1 - Ball security is paramount. Do not turn the ball over.

#2 - If we start every drive at the 25 (i.e. if we fair catch every kick off) and get one first down, it is likely that we will be able to flip the field and cause our opponent to have a less advantageous starting position than we did.

We've slacked off on returns because field position matters little to our offense. Risks aren't worth the rewards.

It’s called strategy. LSU’s offense in 2011 desperately needed a boost from TM7 at times. Our offense in 2019 needs the ball. I can guarantee that if we played aggressive in the return game this year, the fumbles and muffed punts, even if only 2 or 3, would’ve cost us more points than we would’ve gotten from return TD’s. fricking dumb thing to complain about

You shouldn't have and are not the first.

We are beating teams by an average of 25 points without the need of points on special teams, outside of field goals (and that is not a huge factor). Special Teams doesn't need to create explosive plays when our offense scores on most possessions and our defense does more than well enough to keep the game out of reach for the other team.
