Obviously you never met Bill....he was an old grump. He was obsessed with his genius. He was a good coach but horrible for PR and did not fit in BR/LSU.

The players only respected his ability to get them drafted higher because of his influence in NFL. Perhaps Bob Broadhead's worst move in bring Bill in.

Bill was a great DC who had no qualities that made him a great HC.

He left LSU and went to our rival Florida as AD. Ugh!

Yep, do NOT have fond memories of the guy. Always seemed like a grumpy old man who didn't want to be here. Then leaves us with Archer beginning our dark years, and hires Spurrier who skull fricks us for years.

IIRC after he accepted the Florida AD position he was still allowed to coach LSU in a bowl game. Given his attitude and the way things went down, I wouldn't have let him.

arnsparger was a damn good coach but he was an a-hole, esp over LSU not hiring him as AD. he tryed to push it down the board's throat and they told him to shove it.

He gave the most boring press conferences and answers to media qustions. "We are just trying to get better better each week. Can't rest on our laurels. "

I disagree. While it didn't end well he did in fact put in 3 good years and righted the ship. He as a good solid coach and it showed on the field. We went to the Sugar twice in that period something we hadn't done in 15+ years prior. He may not have recruited all the well which is why Archer struggled (and of course Archer didn't recruit well either beginning the start of a the worst period in LSU football.

Wha...?

He was outscored 32-79 in losing all three bowl games he coached LSU in - and yes, that includes a 21-7 loss to Baylor.

(Let us not mention the loss to M of O)

He is 86.

His last coaching stint was as DC for the Chargers in 1993.

How about Terry Robiski......very well respected NFL coach and not much LSU love.

Or Bert Jones.....best QB ever at LSU!

Arnsparger

Just as Dinardo set the stage for LSU's re-emergence - Arnsparger set the stage for LSU's decade+ decline.

He was a solid, if unspectacular, coach, who lost 3 straight bowl games. I bear him no ill will, but what is particularly "honorable" about a coach who goes 26-8-2? He did break LSU's SEC Championship drought, but I think that's hardly worth a Bill Arnsparger day, statue, street, building, etc. type honorific.

Just my $0.02.

I can't say anything. That is when I got into LSU football. They didn't come on TV on Saturday night, so I used to get up early on Sunday morning and watch the replay on ESPN.

In his defense, even though Broadhead brought him in, I don't think the two got along.
Conversely, one of his first hires at Florida was Buddy Alexander as golf coach ...away from LSU. I think he was a good coach but 3 years was enough for him of college coaching.
Wish him well in his golden years, but no special recognition due IMHO.

All I can say is, there was nothing like being at a road victory (like bama) and seeing Arnie jogging over to the LSU section after the game escorted by the La Highway Patrol and waving his LSU hat to the crowd which was going W I L D ! !
