Just perusing the 69 team record (when I was 13) and notice they outscored 1st 6 opponents 218-44, lost by 3 to Arch & OM, then outscored remaining 3 teams 108-21. We all mostly know the story after with the Sugar/Cotton/Notre Dame bowl fiasco and we ended up staying home. Just trying to recall was this team offense considered a juggernaut then, was similar to 2011 and/or could be what this year could be like?
It does appear they obviously padded those #'s with some weak teams (Baylor, Rice, Greenies, UK, Ms. St. was not good then, etc.) and shows only 1 team ranked (AU #14 & 1 point W - gumps not even ranked then!) but the defense was vey solid also!
If only could have played Texas how great game would have been?!!
I know, am itching for the season to begin and end these reminiscent threads!

That was a great season. I was in graduate school then living in the married student apartments near the stadium. That one point Auburn win was a classic. Conservative Cholly Mac calls a halfback pass on the first play from scrimmage - TD. Pat Sullivan keeps Auburn in the game. A blocked XP seals the win for LSU. I'm ready for a new season.

I was eleven and still have not gotten over the loss to Ole Miss. I remember the Auburn game the previous week. We scored on the 1st play of the game on a halfback pass and won it with a blocked extra point.

That was a fantastic team. First team I can remember. Wasn't it the next year of the famous broke arm game.

A great Tiger season that is often overlooked. Only three close games all year. The team got screwed with the bowl and final rankings.

That was media bias. That team is on the CFP in today's world. Media loved Michigan, tOSU, ND, Bama, and USCw. That's it.

I count no championships before BCS for that reason.

That was their main team piece my friend! As others said will never forget the loss but yes 70 was the one arm game in TS. But who was our QB, Hillman I believe? What I was wondering were these big #'s from the offense just due the competition?

Weese was after Manning. In 1970 the famous "Archie Who at LSU" game resulted in a 61-17 beating with 3 punts returned for TDs. Casanova had two and Craig Burns had the other. A very satisfying game to watch on TV. Remember us old timers were lucky if we got 3 or 4 games on TV back then in a season.

I am thinking Buddy Lee was QB in 1970. Took the job after Butch Duhe died of aneurism.

(Norris Weiss)

Nov. 1, 1969: Ole Miss 26, LSU 23 - Archie Manning passed and scrambled the Rebels to a second-straight three-point win over the Tigers, costing LSU a perfect season. The 9-1 Tigers eventually chose to stay home after the Cotton Bowl picked Notre Dame to face No. 1 Texas.

Norris Weiss...

This LSU team might still have the record of allowing an average of only 42 yds rushing per game.

This was Mac's national championship team. Texas was ranked 1, but did not want to play LSU (Texas never threw and you could not run on LSU in 69 or 70), and backed out of a gentelman's agreement and played Notre Dame instead. LSU was the best team in the country that year.

Yep, and they beat the 8-1-1 Irish to win MNC; I believe ND beat them the next year.
1970 Tigers were not bad either; after losing the opener on a slip by defender on last play they reeled off 7 straight including @ gumps before the 0-3 L @ ND then the heartbreaker to eventual MNC Nebraska in Orange!

OK nice, was at the Bama game with my dad. Recall B Bryant leaning against the goalpost during warm-ups; beat them in a thriller although I don't think they were ranked.

i was at that Bama game too - my second game ever in TS. I remember Bear leaning against the post also. I would run into him and his bodyguard several years later at Fun Fair Park the night before the '73 game. He was drunk but so nice and fun to talk with. He said he was very worried about the game the next night because of crowd noise. Bama won that game 21-7
