getting a baseball signed

I was looking to get a baseball signed to add to my LSU office. So I found an email address for a representative of the LSU baseball, I sent this person a email asking if I could get a baseball autographed if I sent it to the athletic department or baseball office. Understand I would provide the ball via mail, and all I wanted to see if they could get it signed for me. They responded by telling me this would be against NCAA rules and regulations so they couldn't help me out but I could go to their site and purchase a ball for a fee.
Could someone answer why is this this against rules and regulations for them to collect a few signatures on a ball for me, it wasn't like they were even giving me the ball, I was providing it myself. I'm not a future athlete so it wasn't a question about my ameteur status being affected by recieving gifts.
Also does anyone have any good suggestions on how to get a ball signed by a majority of the team?

It violates NCAA rules.

because they have no idea if you are going to take the ball and sell it for profit.

Some schools allow it. I think the "NCAA rules" is a way for them to say no, and not have the distraction to their athletes, and also to avoid problems that could arise from it.

There is autographed merchandise you can find on the web.

No idea. In 2003 I bought a full size Schutt LSU helmet and had a friend who was half-way connected with the team put it in the locker room and from time to time guys would sign it. got it back near the end of the year with nearly everyone on it...notable exceptions were Marquise Hill and Saban.
Maybe LSU can't do it from an official standpoint, but I bet you could find a way.

They do this after every home game, what was so hard about it?
