I don't think you bring in Lange but someone should have been warming at the start of the B8. Mainieri made it clear he was not going to jeopardize Lange's future bringing him back that soon, so he was not going to play last night regardless of the situation. Some people may not agree with that decision, but I don't think it's a poor decision either. However, Peterson, Bain, Beck Bush, someone should have been ready to go when Hess was tiring and his pitches becoming flatter and slower.

However, truth be told, when we were unable to score a second straight inning with no outs and runners on 1st and 3rd, I think all the wind went out of our sails.

Season is on the line. Seems every effort should be made until the very last out

Definitely agree that the wind was out of our sails at that point. But at the same time it's still a 1 run game with the season on the line.

Wrong...bigger question is why he let Reynolds single-handedly walk the bases loaded.

For Alex Lange there is and it has 7 figures, Paul did right by him.

Agree. As much as they said they were comfortable knowing the best 2 guys were still to come, you're still down 1-0 in the champ series to a great team and anything can happen.

Once we had such a good chance and were unable to steal game 1, I was scared. Everyone seemed to be all positive but I was afraid of the toll it may take on the guys

With runners on 1st and 2nd or even once he lets them get loaded. Hell even with 1 run across, YOU HAVE TO STOP THE BLEEDING. Alex Lange has to enter that game in the bottom of the 8th with Florida threatening. Wouldn't he be ok for an inning on 3 days ? Wouldn't that normally be bull pen day? And if not him atleast more of an effort. Seems we gave up

He just wouldn't do that to Lange, and I can't blame him. He actually came out and said that early in the week as well, I believe. Beyond that, it would have been a reasonable decision because we still had Gilbert for game 3.

Honestly, I think his biggest mistake was going to Hess when he did. People are glossing over that decision but I thought it was really, really bad for the following reasons:

* It was too early. We had just see Hess look different in the OSU series after being extended and there was no indication he could go 3 and 1/3rd innings.

* Jared Poche had found his groove and retired 10 of the last 11. His pitch count was around 100 as I recall and he wasn't really showing signs of losing effectiveness, IMO.

* Most importantly we had nothing behind Hess. When Hess lost it in the 8th, we had Matthew Beck up in the bullpen. Let that sink in.

Apparently nobody else was available. Forget Lange. Forget Gilbert. None of the guys who threw yesterday were available either. So, with that said, how in the world can you go to Hess so early?

If the Tigers dont make a boatload of errors and base running poor judgements and mental errors in those two games , they win them both easily, That however is baseball!! I didn see CPM with a glove on out there , did you? It was a great season , Better than every other team except one!!

But asking him to come back on 3 days rest just for an inning doesn't seem to be jeopardizing his future. Wouldn't that normally be bull pen day anyway?

no, his BP session was Monday before game 1. Again, you may think he was fine to go, but if Mainieri isn't going to play someone because of concerns about what it would do to his health, I tend not to question decisions like that because I don't believe I'm at liberty to judge if it's a risk or not
