I got to play many a round of golf with Earl, and then at the 19th hole, if prodded, he would tell stories of his playing days. I don't remember him talking much about his days at LSU but he did have quite a few stories about playing for Lombardi and the Packers.

One thing I remember most was that he recalled being drafted in the first round by the Packers the year after they had won the NFL championship. He said he got a $6000 bonus and his salary was $16,000 per year...for a FIRST round draft pick!! My how times have changed. He said lots of guys on the team had side jobs to cover their expenses in the off season. Of course back then the offseason was from January to August with no OTA's sprinkled in.

Earl was a great guy and right up until the end he looked like he was still strong and tough enough to pick up a 3rd and one if need be!! RIP big Earl!

My Earl Gros story is:

When LSU went up to Columbus, OH to play OSU we had the chance to speak with OSU Coach Cooper. He said I will test your LSU knowledge and then asked us:

Who was the first LSU running back drafted by Coach Lombardi?

Of course, we all answered Jimmy Taylor and Coach Cooper laughed and said....all wrong, Earl Gros was the first RB drafted by Coach Lombardi.
