That's why he's being hired as an assistant.
I guess JJ will head back to his old stomping grounds. They must think of him as a legend up there at UNT.

we'll have to see how the staff looks as a whole before grading this hire anyway

Much tougher conference than Sun Belt

100% agree.

A staff should be looked at as a whole, not the parts. He wants someone to recruit Texas, and he wants someone to recruit Louisiana... If this is your guy with long term ties to Texas, then it seems like a good move. Just make sure you fill the rest of the staff with the proper pieces.

Agreed. This is your TX connection.

No reason not to trust Wade at this point.

I am disappointed. I know nothing about this guy except that he is connected in a round about way with our out going coach. I just think that Wade would have been smarter to hire someone who couldn't be compared in anyway to CJJ and that would have brought a fresh outlook to the team. I also wonder how Wade knows this guy and if he is not getting advice from the wrong places.

Holy sheeeeeeeeeeeeit this place is the worst.

I often wonder how much more I would enjoy LSU sports if I had never discovered TD.

Benford took over a UNT program at its pinnacle after Jones left for LSU heading into the 2012-13 season, but was unable to maintain its momentum.

Yikes

Its not easy to follow in the footsteps of a legend like Johnny Jones. Hopefully Will can handle the pressure.

Is this a troll? I don't remember your basketball posts in the past being this... Mind-numbingly stupid.

The thing that concerns me though, is if he has strong recruiting ties to the state of Texas, why couldn't he get enough Texas players to help him field at least an average team at North Texas? That scares me at least a little even if he is a better assistant than head coach. I believe in Wade's ability though, so assistants aren't going to make or break him. Unlike Johnny, Wade is an excellent in game coach so he doesn't need the best assistants to hide his weaknesses.

I'm sure there's a difference between recruiting Texas players to NT and recruiting them to, say, UT.

It's not necessarily the results that are most important, it's the connections. I'm sure you remember this when O was looking for a WR and RB coach.

Very good hire. He can recruit and knows Texas. I know he was highly regarded at Marquette as well.

That's definitely fair. I hope he will be able to sell LSU easier than UNT. It is tough to judge an assistant coach on his job as a head coach but I do think having that experience will help him moving forward as an assistant.

It was the same thing with Musselman coming in as an assistant even though he had been fired from his NBA head coaching job. You are judging someone on a different position with a different skillset needed. From everything else I've read, he has been looked at as a good to great assistant coach who failed as a head coach at a school not known for their basketball.

Exactly. If he is being hired you can bet he has an in or two with some recruits that have already been identified.
