When can we expect LSU to be elite again up front on defense? We're there on the edge with Key and the other rush LBs in the pipeline, but how long on the tackles? Lawrence may be the next great one, but with Gilmore and possibly Lacouture starting in '17, these guys can be good, but have a ceiling, right? How many seasons before we're looking at an '03/'11 quality front 4?

I can deal with an offense that is sluggish at times, but it's hard to stomach seeing LSU get blown off the ball up front.

It really looks like this will be the deepest and most talented we've been on the defensive line in some time. Lacouture, Herron, Gilmore, Alexander, Lawrence, Key, and a bunch of other pass rushers. Probably the best group of interior lineman we've had since Brockers/Logan. Gilmore needs to be more consistent, though.

They're definitely getting better. Bringing O in as DL coach and now as head coach means if nothing else, we can count on great Dlines again.

I expect good-not-great this season, but I don't know enough about the young guys to project beyond that. We need to see opponents' yards per rush under 3 and sacks per game above 3 to be elite again.

Other than Godchaux, Neal and Bower, everyone's back including LaCouture. And youre right, we havent had the 1st round talent on the DL for a while. We definitely got shoved around 2 yrs ago, but not so much last year in year 2 of the Arranda change to the 3-4.
Im pretty optimistic that our front 7 will be a strong point for the team this year. Arden Key is a beast edge rusher should be the best in the SEC. He's also fairly strong at the point of attack, maybe the best defensive player in the country.

Lacouture and Gilmore are solid, good SEC players. Gilmore is underrated. Lawrence and Alexander showed promise last year and Justin Thomas looked great in the spring game.

PS.
Im a huge fan on Devin White, IL and believe he may go down as one of the very best we've ever had. He is the key to us having a smothering and intimidating run defense between the tackles. Im looking forward to him adjusting a few helmets for opposing RB's this year.

other than the fact we don't run a front 4, I'd say we'll be back there this year. If Key gets his crap together, we'll have the top dlineman in the country and draft.

My bad. You are correct. Year 2 in the Arranda scheme can only help. Arranda destroyed Petrino's offense last year in the bowl, that was fun to watch.

Arden Key lines up on the line of scrimmage most of the time so call him a LB or whatever you want, but it's a front 4. He's not blitzing from 3 yards back.

His hand is basically never in the ground, he's a rush OLB in Aranda's 3-4. Yes, there's a difference, as small as it may be.

key has his hand in the dirt quite often. Read somewhere that it's his decision to rush as a down lineman or standing up.

I expect the defense to be very good, however, they have to replace seven starters. Godchaux, Neal, Bower, Riley , Beckwith, White and Adams. Five of the seven were drafted and the other two signed as free agents. That's a lot to lose.

The talent is there but not a lot of experience. Particularly at linebacker and safety. Some young guys are going to have to grow up fast.

If he's on the line he's part of the front 4.

The point of this thread is the quality of the other 3 going forward. I think Lawrence and Alexander have the potential to be elite. They need to find another legit DE and they could be back to 2011 levels.

Just my personal opinion, but it's going to be pretty hard to make a comparison between this class and that of 03/11, because those were four man fronts and the three man front will rely more on a healthy and deep linebacker rotation backing them up. I think the talent of the current Dline is as good overall (with much undiscovered potential) and the Dline coaching is undoubtedly better.

QB and DT are the two positions we have really been subpar lately. It looks like DT is slowly getting fixed and hopefully QB will also.

IMO 2 of the most important positions in college football.

2018 Season.

We need to sign more consistent 1st rounders here. Having guys like Lawrence, Alexander, Shelvin, Ferrell, and Logan is a great start but it's not enough. Can't afford to loose guys like Wilson, Buggs, & Mathis to compete for titles. Those hurt but we are certainly improving since CEO came on board.

Key is not a DL and no its not a front 4. You can call him that if you want, thats your choice, but he's a LB.
