But after 6'2" 330 pound nose tackle Beau Allen and star linebacker Borland departed, the Badger front no longer included a collection of obvious 3-4 defensive players but instead several tweener-sized players at multiple positions.

That suited Aranda just fine, and he made use of the versatility in his players to create a defense heavy on disguise and movement that finished seventh in the nation on passing downs on 15th overall in S&P.

good to hear he can adapt given the personnel issues and likely LB depth issues

article goes on to show the scheme adjustment between Ohio State and Auburn in how they handled spread running teams

as for traditional power teams?

quote:

Traditional smashmouth teams that don't try to spread out defenses before overpowering them in the middle are in arguably even worse shape against the Wisconsin defense as they'll have to contend with cover 1 robber schemes that play Biegel and Schobert on the edges with Caputo roving in the middle:

quote:

The Badger defense is built more for snuffing out pro-style, Big 10 offenses than handling the stresses of a spread offense. But with versatile hybrids like Biegel, Caputo, and McEvoy on the field Dave Aranda is finding solutions that will allow them to also play high level defense against the dangerous spread offenses creeping into the Big 10.

That says Versatility, adaptability and flexibility. This will be fun to watch. I'll be curious to see how well or/and quickly they pick up the scheme.

He sounds like he is huge on match ups. The scheme seems complicated on paper but from the talk with him and Dinardo it sounds like for the actual player it is simple. Hard for the offense to figure out but easy for the D to learn it.

that is the big question mark

our upperclassmen are going to be in their 3rd scheme in as many years and there may be a clash of personality

and the wisky posters saying "intelligence" may be an issue may be correct. LSU has had issues with things like communication and organization and confusion is a very big and common problem. chavis ran a simple scheme and drilled it well and steele added more wrinkles and we had some mass confusion at times

mainly i'm saying if we have issues next year personnel and finding the right fit may be it and not the coach

Steele has had massive communication problems at Clemson as well.

I think DA is smart enough to not go all out if we don't have the players that can understand. He sounds like he can break it down extremely simple for our play makers to understand what they are doing.

This is a very good thing. He seems really smart. It just stuck out to me how one paper it confuses the O but he talked about telling his players its the one on one match ups.

agreed, we have the horses for a mostly man scheme. we don't need to get fancy.
