People on here FAR exaggerate the clout our program had before Saban. Basically, minus a few years in the 80's, LSU had been a non-factor since the early 70's. This is just a fact.

"Minus few years in the '80s", meaning six (1982 and 1984-88)? The majority of the decade. Well, sure, if you throw out the majority of the decade and just keep the part that makes your point, you can argue just about anything. For instance...

Minus 7 years in the '90s, LSU was a very strong program in that decade, finishing in the top 25 and winning a bowl every year.

Minus 7 years in the '00s, LSU has been quite mediocre in this decade, going 8-5 every year and never finishing in the top 25.

Minus 6 years in the 70's, LSU was a major power, going to a big-four major bowl or winning at least 9 games every year.

What a stupid argument.

without Saban's tenure here, we are most likely still an irrelevant program.

So, you're saying that if Saban hadn't taken the job, Emmert would not have found anyone who could have gotten us into national contention? I seriously doubt that. Emmert was going to find a good coach no matter what. It was SABAN'S good luck, not ours, that he happened to be the one he found.

Then explain why he had only 1 season at Mich St with more than 7 wins? Did the bayou transform him into a better coach or is it that LSU is a better program?

Nick Saban did get pro offers while at MSU. If he had taken one and done what he did at Miami would Alabama have offered him $4M?

No shite LSU is a better program than MSU and always has been. But to say LSU made Nick Saban is just retarded. If LSU was the main factor then how come so many other guys didn't have Saban's success? LSU helped Saban, but he is the reason why LSU has been great this decade. LSU doesn't make coaches like rantards would have you believe.

Look at our recruiting vs. Michigan State...We have all of Louisiana at our disposal plus a lot of east Texas as well. MSU doesn't even control recruiting in their own state (The wolverines do), not to mention the talent from Michigan is much less than what we have down here...Saban's ability to get the talent from these areas at LSU is what made him successful...Many said LSU was a "sleeping giant" before his arrival

Indeed..same was said about Florida in the early 90's(long before that too, IIRC) Guess the Bammers accredit all of UF's recent success to Spurrier...

Miles is the only coach in the country held to this criteria...by opposing fans or otherwise.

I like LM better than Saban, but I think its true Saban turned the program around, and for years to come we will benefit from that. What's the beef?

because the guys we hired were not good coaches and the overall program was in disarray. I doubt Saban would have taken the job if the program was in the same state as it was in 94.

of course not, you have to be a good coach to succeed long term, but still if asshats like Mike Archer and Gerry DiNardo won 10 games and finished in the top 10. Turning LSU around was not as difficult as some make it sound.

Count me as a +1 on this but I think I know where the beef is: it is with those who try to give Saban all of the credit so as to detract from what what Miles & co. have done. In reality, the credit should be probably be spread around.

Saban changed the culture at LSU

So why didn't he change it at Michigan St? Sorry, but LSU and the instate talent of Louisiana made Saban!

He did, no doubt. That he was the one who took advantage of the situation and cast his lot with LSU was his good luck. Erickson and a couple of others had talked with LSU and couldn't get around money. LSU upped the ante thanks to TAF kicking in more and Saban bit. Less for the extra money(it wasn't much more than was discussed with others) but for the committment to the new facilities.

Not to get off the subject, but in 2003 we were going to the Nat'l Championship game as soon as we won the SEC Championship game. The real debate was who we were going/should have played, Oklahoma or USC. We were a solid second no matter what. The surprising of 2003 was the voters keeping Oklahoma first after their embarrassing loss to Kansas State in the Big XII Championship. Thus began the animosity between LSU and USC and their desire for their missed match-up.
