Also, for those wondering, LSU's BA drops over 20 points if you take out Rhymes, who collected over 17% of LSU's hits in SEC games...

LSU minus Rhymes, 235 H, 908 AB, .259
-----------------------------------------------------
LSU total = 284 H, 1015 AB, .280
Rhymes = 49 H, 107 AB, .458

These appear to be LSU's best hitters against top competition...

Rhymes, .458
Snikeris, .333
Katz, .299
Edward, .297
Ross, .287
Jones, .282
Moore, .254
Fields, .253
Nola, .239
Hanover, .236

Keep in mind that the total SEC average was only .266 this year.

If you had bet me that Nola's SEC average is lower than Jacoby's average I would have lost that bet.

Weird, huh?

Check out the only team LSU didn't play this year...

Lsu finished the SEC season 3rd in fielding and team ERA as well as 4th in batting avg...Teetime eats a lil crow and glad Ty Moore given his shot at 1st and allowing Katz to go back to RF..Made a huge difference down the stretch....See you in Omaha....

There is far more to hitting than just avg. Plus these sample sizes are tiny, like only 42 AB's (against mainly lefties) for Snikeris but according to you he's our second best hitter.

Wow. That is an amazing statistic. I wonder if any SEC champion has ever had a run differential that was this low.

This stat has to say something about:
1) the job our coach did managing the games
2) how mentally tough our team is

Of course, it may say that we played really poorly in the SEC games that we lost.

Yes, you're correct. Katz looked like a liability at 1st in the last and most important series of the year

I'll get killed for this but we had to have a lot of luck to win the SEC this year. Last year we lost many close games but this year a bunch of breaks went our way. We are a good team but far from dominating like some of the teams we had in the past.

One more weird stat breakdown and then I'll quit for today--LSU run production for the 1st 3 SEC series vs. LSU run production for the last 7 SEC series.

After the first 3 series vs. MSU, at Auburn, and vs. Arkie, the SEC stats looked like this:

Runs Scored
1. UF, 54
2. UK, 53
3. AR, 46
4. AU, 45
5. OM, 43
6. SC, 42
7. MS, 41
8. GA, 39
9. AL, 38
10. VU, 34
11. TN, 33
12. LS, 32 = 3.56 / game

But for the last 7 SEC series...

Runs Scored
1. SC*, 121
2. AR, 112
2. VU, 112
4. LS, 107 = 5.10 / game
4. AU, 107
6. AL, 91
7. UF, 89
8. UK, 88
8. MS, 88
10. GA*, 86
11. OM, 82
12. TN, 61

We're like 37-4 when scoring 4 runs. That's pretty fricking stout.

NIck Goody was the difference...10 saves as a part of a 12-5 mark in 17 one run games....

I think it was like that because it seemed a lot of the time we would barely win our games and take a series but the games we lost we would lose by quite a few points

I'd say it was more a matter of Florida & SCAR not being able to close on their games this year. Statistically speaking, they were better than their records this year--ESPECIALLY the Gators. The wheels came off for Kentucky too.

I really wouldn't call LSU's season lucky this year. A team that is 7th in the conference in run production, but that also backs it up with the type of pitching talent LSU has, is going to win exactly the kind of way that LSU often won.

Also, LSU's defense was probably better than statistically indicated, (A) because LSU didn't play Tennessee, and (B) because LSU had more of an ability to shut down the other team when it was necessary to do so--i.e., LSU had more closing power.
