Field discipline & crisp execution: does it require an iron fist?

We all know about the QB/offense issue, but what about the across-the-board sloppy play that has doomed this team time to time. I think a saw a stat that had LSU as the #1 or #2 most penalized team over the past 5 years.......

Saban is a master at the fine details which bolsters execution and the razor sharp edge they carry much of the time. BUT, he's a hard arse and Les seems he is more of a buddy.

It comes down to crisp individual execution IMHO. THAT is the single biggest issue I have.

I think when you yell at someone they remember why they fricked up. At least in football. I'd sure like to see someone get their arse chewed after multiple penalties on one drive.

Everyone needs to get chewed out once in a while. Players remember when coaches get in their faces and it isnt a pleasant experience. Les likes to just nod it off and hope that it doesnt happen. Just get Orgeron to get into faces and all these penalties will be gone

I'm kind of disappointed that the season is over. I was really starting to enjoy the 5 yard false start penalty that LSU receives once every two or three drives.

True and the strict disciplinarian model seems to work better in football.

Guys like Pete Carroll had a ton of success in the player's coach model in CFB, so I guess you can do it that way too.

Carroll was extremely fired up all the time and his teams were always motivated. They also had strong leadership amongst the players.

Miles' teams used to have that fire and that leadership amongst the players but it's been lacking the past few seasons.

having an iron fist and screamin at players is mean spirited and will not be tolerated at LSU by sunshine pumpers - coaches will be turned into the governor for their punishments if found guilty.

At a minimum, I would hope he runs the shite out of them for each occurrence. Pete Mangurian (oline) and Arnspager would destroy guys for dumb mistakes.

The contradiction in response from fumbling to penalties is overwhelming.

Fumble = bench

Personal Foul = "Come on guys, you have to increase your want for perfection and victory...now get back in there and let's finish #1"

at getting refs to ignore holding on his oline...

But to this point, if I recall, the 2003 team was one of the most penalized in the nation. During the Eli falls down game there were quite a few false starts.

I honestly feel he may have too soft of an approach with his oline.

to me its more about brain capacity, planning, and practicing.

i dont think it has to do with attitude.

Mile's brain just doesnt work that way. He doesn't understand

Guys like Carroll and Dungy can be just as demanding, they just don't make a scene out of it.

Can't we all just get along, Miles is a nice guy. Kirk H said clock management issues are a part of LM's charm. I had a D line coach that loved to drag you around by the face mask while chewing you out.

Les and Richt have basically the same demeanor on the sidelines. Rarely get in a player's face for a bad mental error, when sometimes it's needed. College kids need to get chewed out on occasion - it's keeps them focused.

That's a big reason why both Les' and Richt's teams are undisciplined and heavily penalized.

In reality all it takes is setting an expectation of excellence and being consistent in your response. One of the best coaches I played for growing up was a players' coach but excellence was worked into everything we did, and we won a ton of games and championships. It really isn't about being a nice guy or a hard arse, it's much more of a culture thing.

most of the "experts" say teams that aren't penalized a lot are well coached...so its safe to say that teams that do commit a lot of penalties aren't well coached
