Because Oregon has played in a grand total of one close game all year.

That's my point. These ESPN pundits are quick to point out the games LSU "should have lost," but fail to do the same for today's media darlings like Oregon and Boise.

If LSU had one or two close games you may have a point, but the entire season has been nothing but close games

Thank you.

Including close games with really, really bad teams.

exactly. Other than Cal, their closest game was an 11 point at ASU, then a 20 point win at WSU.

How many Elite teams have no other state competition for players?

What in the world does that matter?

Look at Georgia. UGA competes with only G-Tech for in-state players, and G-Tech is almost like Tulane is to LSU. But beyond that, the state of Georgis has TWICE the number of recruits that Louisiana does. Sure, Louisiana has the most blue-chippers PER CAPITA. The metro area for Atlanta has more people than Louisiana. What that means is, going by pure numbers, UGA should be just as well off as LSU - if not better off.

Hell, look at USC. The city of Los Angeles alone has almost 4 times the population of Louisiana in its metro area. They have to compete with UCLA-Tulane for those recruits. LA could have half the blue-chippers PER CAPITA as Louisiana and still have TWICE as many blue chippers.

This whole thing about LSU as having some big advantage for being the obnly major school in state is hogwash because the state's population is so small.

After all, schools don't recruit per capita, they have 85 'ships to give, and a particular pool from which to draw.

Look at Georgia

We did a thread on this last summer. There are something like eight major Division I programs with 300 miles of Athens, GA.

There is one major Div. I program within 300 miles of LSU.

It makes an enormous difference.

ETA: Comparing Georgia Tech and UCLA to Tulane kills your credibility.

Lsu looked good in Florida, bama, ulm and even ole miss. They just happened to play their best game of the year, and took all the chances (fourth down conversions, onside kicks etc)

Top 80 players in Georgia, Georgia has 11 committed to them... Out of the Top 10 they have 1 with 6 uncommitted, out of Top 25 they have 7 with 7 uncommitted.

Now let us look at Louisiana, LSU has 6 of Top 10 with 3 uncommitted, LSU has 13 of Top 25 with 10 uncommitted.

Ole Miss and Tennessee are shitastic teams.

UNC is average at best.

If LSU's only close games were to Florida, Auburn, and Alabama, no one would bat an eye.

LSU is #6 in the Coaches and the AP and #5 in the BCS.

We can nitpick this stuff to death, but it's all opinion and LSU seems to be holding their own in all these polls to this point in time.

We just need to climb that big Arkansas hill and then let the chips fall where they fall.

It's been a pretty sweet season already for those of us who can enjoy success for what it is...success no matter how it came about.

Louisiana is the 5th or 6th best recruiting state in the country and is usually first or second in pro-football players per capita.

Overall population statistics are irrelevant.

I doubt it. When it only happens once, the media doesn't normally harp on it.

The truth of the matter is without the clusterfrick that was the end of the Tennessee game, the media probably doesn't question LSU's legitimacy at all.

I agree Tennessee game is the biggest one the media has against LSU. The Florida game and the bounce got much play as being lucky as well. Not close to what Tennessee game did but many comments of luck were made since an inch the other way it would have been a forward pass.

does not compute.

Whereas I support your overall point in this thread... this is inconsistent. you could be the best talent per capita state, but only have 10 great players because of a small population. LSU would still need to fill the other 15 scholarships. If your state was 25th talent per capita, you could still have 40 great players because of a huge population.

I think you should focus on the fact that LSU isn't competing with any other division 1 school for the talent.

Now THAT's what I'm talking about! Keep it simple. That's all that matters what you just typed.
