Does anyone here follow Evangel and think they have a legitimate shot to beat Allen this Friday? I would love to go to the game, but I do not feel like sitting through another Allen blowout.

No clue. Allen is damn good this year. That being said, Evangel is the one high school from the state of Louisiana that I know of off the top of my head. They've been good since the early 90's.

Will not compete. Maybe the Evangel of old, but not now.

Evangel still goes to play the big guys which is commendable, however they're not coached like the Evangel we grew up watching.

Evangel is supposed to have a pretty good squad this year too. Better than recent years, but not the "national championship" level teams of the early 2000s.

Allen should win fairly easily.

I heard Jacob Hester found out he had one more game of high school eligibility and he's been practicing with Evangel.

A little bit off topic.

But I've never understood how they nationally rate high school teams. It's 10X more subjective than college football.

I don't believe in national rankings for high school football.

By Max-Preps

Curtis was rated #1 in Louisiana for the decade in the 90's to 2004.

Evangel was dominate...but they have a 2-6 record against Curtis, right? The last 15 years.

Allen,TX won state titles the last 4 years and had a 57-game winning streak.

Overall - from 1990 to 2004 by Max Preps.

1. De La Salle (Concord, Calif.) - 502
Overall record: 127-12-2
State championships: 5
National Top 25 finishes: 7

2. Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey, N.J.) - 406
Overall record: 106-11
State (Group) Championships: 6
National Top 25 finishes: 5

3. Trinity (Louisville, Ky.) - 383
Overall record: 120-21
State championships: 7
National Top 25 finishes: 4

4. Maryville (Tenn.) - 359
Overall record: 145-5
State championships: 7
National Top 25 finishes: 3

5. Bellevue (Wash.) - 354
Overall record: 127-7
State championships: 7
National Top 25 finishes: 3

6. Skyline (Sammamish, Wash.) - 352
Overall record: 115-19
State championships: 6
National Top 25 finishes: 4

6. Byrnes (Duncan, S.C.) - 352
Overall record: 130-15
State championships: 6
National Top 25 finishes: 3

8. Hoover (Ala.) - 340
Overall record: 136-14
State championships: 5
National Top 25 finishes: 3

9. South Panola (Batesville, Miss.) - 338
Overall record: 139-10
State championships: 7
National Top 25 finishes: 3

10. Trinity (Euless, Texas) - 322
Overall record: 125-18
State championships: 3
National Top 25 finishes: 6
Carroll was rated #1 in Texas for the decade in the 90's.

Top 20 Most dominant high school teams in the Max Prep era

But the whole national ranking system seems totally arbitrary.

Everything is regional in high school football.

Those 2005-2007 Curtis teams could have beat anyone in the nation, maybe Bastrop too

yea the talent basically gets split between Evangel and Calvary and then you have programs like Byrd who probably started keeping kids that would have gone to either

Evangel had a 60 game winning streak with Brock Berlin, maybe longer. He went 60-0 on the field. They had to forfeit games later for recruiting. Curtis played in 4A, Evangel 3A, West Monroe in 5A. West Monroe had a 42 game winning streak in the late 90's as well. Curtis won state pretty much every year since their inception. It's honestly amazing how successful they've been.

As far as Evangel this year, their D is supposed to be the best in the state. I don't think they have the depth to beat Allen. Should be a good game though.

Yep, those teams were so good that class 5A and 4A schools would rather chance destroying the LHSAA than have to play them.

As many have stated, Evangel today is far removed from the Evangel of the 90s through early 2000s. Those teams could have, and pretty much did beat ANYBODY they played. Once Johnny and JD Booty defected to Calvary and USC, the split caused the demise. Many players and families of players left with them to ultimately form a split squad. This years Evangel defense is strong and they have a few weapons on offense, but simply won't be able to compete with the national powers like in the past. They may even win state this year, and I'm not sure Allen is as strong as in the last few years, but I still see Allen winning by 3 TDs unfortunately. I hear Calvary is struggling to stay open so that may bring it all back to Evangel national prominence. Hope so, those old Evangel teams were fun to watch dominating National powers.
