Or, with the 85 limit, does it just allow the coaches to award a scholarship to a previous walk-on or something like that?

Depends. It helps with the 85, but not the 25 SEC Cap.

Eh, kind of

You can sign a maximum of 28 each year with only 25 enrolling in a given class. You can never go over the 85 limit.

In short, you typically have a few guys going pro and then about 6-8 that leave each year from attrition (depth chart, injury, quit football, personal, etc).

With all of the juniors LSU has lost lately, we don't have any issues on the 85 front.

False. You can sign as many as you as long as you can backcount with early enrollees. Look at TAMU last year and Tennessee this year.

That's how the rule used to work. There are limits now.

If you think UT is actually signing all 33 guys they have committed, then you are incorrect.

And yes, I am well aware of the grey shirting approach. Even read recently on 'blue' shirting which was a new concept to me.

For the average person that doesn't want to get caught up in all of the strategic maneuvering of head coaches and the numbers game, I think the question was answered.

I think this was the article. LINK /

In a nutshell, offer a guy a preferred walk-on spot and then once he is on campus you give that walk-on a full scholarship. I do not know if the NCAA has created a rule against this now, but I heard about this tactic for the first time a few weeks ago.

This allows you to get around the 25 limit.
