Honestly can't believe they let him fly that over crowds like that. Anything at all goes wrong with it someone gets hurt.
Most local law enforcements have no idea what the regulations are on them. Some over react, some have no reaction.
The FFA has been dragging their feet on getting legit regulations put in place on this class of drone operations.
If you are a farmer that grows cops "for fun", you can use a drone to check your crops to see when its time to replant.
If you are a farmer that grows crops 'for profit', its illegal for you to use a drone to check your crops.
Its really really dumb

Curious, about what time of day was this?
Posted on 11/11/14 at 7:38 pm to meauxjeaux2
that was cool. it wouldn't surprise me that the campus is labeled a no fly zone. great video.

We always tailgate right next to the road that goes around the outfield of Tiger Park. We weren't there this week but I see the people we tailgate with.

That's the dumbest thing I have ever heard of and totally unenforceable.

Im just saying what is in the FFA documentation on hobby drone operation. Its antiquated, and they have been dragging their feet on it big time.
There are only about 4 or 5 companies who have clearance to use similar drones for commercial uses, all are movie production companies.
Part of these approvals require the operator to have over 100 hours of operating a helicopter (among other requirements). Totally retarded, but thats how dumb the FFA is being about this right now.

Oh that wasn't a attack on you. I totally believe what your saying. Its just insane and I don't see how it could be enforced.

I can't even imagine the time and practice it operate that thing going the places he was going. Is he operating it just from standing under it or does he have the ability to flying while viewing through the camera?

Its completely insane, and isnt really enforced.
But they do have a policy of following up on / investigating complaints they get. That is when people get in trouble. It helps them when you leave the proof uploaded to youtube.

There are a few dif models of that drone. It looks like the newer version that streams the video down to your cell phone that you can mount on a clip at the top of the controller. Gives you a first person view with altitude and speed. Otherwise its pretty hard to know what you are recording

This is strange. I have a friend who flies his own private plane and he says there are not as many regulations as one would think, depending upon where you fly, and what altitude. That is if I remember right.

So long as your follow a certain loose set of rules, you remain a 'hobbyist' and its pretty lax.
Once you break any one of those loose set of rules, you aren't a hobbyist, and an entirely new set of rules now applies which isn't lax. Most are common sense. You don't want a bunch of people flying drones near airports, or at high enough altitudes that they could collide with lower flying aircraft. This particular drone can easily go over 1,000 ft in altitude, but to remain a 'hobbyist' you need to keep it under 400 ft. In addition to those rules, anything that can be perceived as a commercial use (the farm example) means you are no longer a hobbyist and all these other rules apply.

We were the closest setup to the bathrooms every game this season.
You tailgate with the guys from north louisiana that put their TV on the back of their truck?

Yep, that is how I remember he put it too, except when applied to him and his two-seater.
Thanks for the explanation.
