Does Devin White have a role against Alabama?

With Jalen Hurts, his strength at this point is more as a runner than a passer. The strategy needs to be to limit his explosive running plays and force him to throw the ball.

Devin White certainly has the speed to play a spy and rundown Hurts on running plays. My concern would be, does he yet posses the skills to read a play and recover if he gets caught in coverage? I don't recall seeing him get much playing time other than maybe late in the Southern Miss game (where I believe he did a great job running down a stretch play).

Thoughts? Is it too risky to devote an important role on an inexperienced player in a huge game despite his talent.

Devin White should be in there to stuff the run with Beckwith in obvious short yardage running situations (like 3rd and 1 or 4th and short).

Edge players can't over-pursue. Must keep him contained.

I hope he gets a non targeting call on a vicious smack down on kick off return

Riley has played well all year long. No way he loses his starting spot for this game

Special teams. He doesn't have a grasp of assignments yet on D and he would get abused by kiffin.

I'd have to put Beckwith on him. KB's closing speed has been stupid this year. Devin will play a lot but Id like to see KB spy Jalen.

I would think we would see him more if he were to have a signifcant role against bama. However, I can't wait to see this dude play.

Riley has played well. If Alabama is getting a push against our Dline we might need white though. Riley struggles taking on olineman when they get to the second level, it's night and day between him and beckwith. White is faster and more physical, just doesn't have Riley's instincts yet.
It comes down to if Hurts on the edge is where they are getting us or if Harris and Scarborough up the middle is where they are getting us.

If Valentine actually gets his head on straight and can command a double team I think Riley has a good game, if Gilmore plays the majority of the game we might need white to see some PT IMO

Some of you may be overlooking one of his biggest attributes and that is his LB instincts. He is a heat-seeking missile who may be further along than some may think.

The gameplan needs to be contain, contain, contain.

The kid is not a great passer, but he's an elite runner for a QB and when he does pass it well, its usually out of the pocket.

CONTAIN, CONTAIN, CONTAIN.

That's an understatement. He definitely played his way into the draft

Correct. Kiffin's playcalling largely does a great job of playing within his capabilities. They give him simple throws, don't ask too much of him and utilize his running abilities.

Right, they do a very good job of moving him around and having him throw on the run. This is an area of concern for me. In the first half of the Ole Miss game, Kelly was finding a lot of success moving around and throwing on the run.

So I was thinking this was a pretty valid point so I did a little comparison.

The only QB we've played with similar statistics (and fortunately they are almost IDENTICAL) is Nick Fitzgerald for MSU.

He has 96 attempts for 538 yards (5.6 per try).
He was 13 attempts for 13 yards against LSU (1 per try).

Hurts is 95 carries for 521 yards (5.5 per try). So almost the exact same.

IMO, If Riley was the main guy against State, then he should be against Bama as well.
